Reader queries from our surveys

Since 2007, we have been taking regular surveys of our readership on HealthyStrokes.com. This page consists of questions and answers that largely draw from the data coming out of these surveys. In general, bear in mind that the survey population consists of people who read this web site, and therefore they masturbate more avidly than the general population. That said, some of the questions that don't ask specifically about masturbation frequency are quite revealing, because of the huge number of responses to these surveys. At this point, nearly all of the questions draw from the two male surveys in 2007. We have only recently begun analyzing questions from the female survey of 2007-08. Currently, both male and female surveys are in progress. Please consider taking the appropriate one for your gender.

Q. I masturbated three times today because it's what I felt like doing. Is that normal? (age 18)

Three times a day every day would be very high -- according to a survey of over 10,000 males by the web site HealthyStrokes.com in the second half of 2007, only 5 percent of 18 year old males masturbate 19 times a week or more. (627 18 year old males answered the question.)

But there is nothing wrong with masturbating three times in one particular day once in a while, and it can be very fun and relaxing if you need it that much on that particular day. Don't worry about it and be glad you know how to perform that kind of therapy on yourself!

Q. I am involved in a debate between circumcised and uncircumcised males about what kind of penis is more fun to masturbate. Do you have any light to shed on this question?

In a survey of over 10,000 males by the web site HealthyStrokes.com in the second half of 2007, males were asked to rate masturbation and (if they had experienced it) intercourse on a scale of 1 to 10. The average rating by a circumcised male for masturbation is 7.98 and for an uncircumcised male is 7.87. For intercourse, circumcised males rate it 8.86 and uncircumcised males rate it 8.77. Those are pretty small differences, and the difference in intercourse rating is not statistically significant. The difference in masturbation rating is statistically significant at the 95% level.

However, in the same survey, the average circumcised male reported masturbating 6.6 times per week. The average uncircumcised male masturbates 6.99 times per week.

The difference in frequency of intercourse is even more striking. Among males who are currently sexually active, the average circumcised male has an orgasm with a partner 2.86 times per week and the average uncircumcised male has an orgasm with a partner 3.24 times per week.

So you can look at it two different ways. Uncircumcised males give masturbating a lower rating, but they do it more, and they also have intercourse more.

Q. I have been masturbating for four years and masturbate four times a day. I feel like I have erectile dysfunction. (age 19)

You sound like you diagnosed yourself with ED. If you are really concerned and think you have a problem, you should see a doctor, who would confirm it and plan a treatment strategy for you.

Why do you think you have ED? If it is because your morning and spontaneous erections are becoming less frequent, that is normal for your age. After age 20 or so, you'll only get an erection when you want one.

If you are having trouble getting an erection when you want to masturbate, it might be worth cutting back to once a day or even three times a week to see if it results in your erections becoming more frequent. Your rate of masturbation is extreme. According to a survey of over 10,000 males for the web site HealthyStrokes.com in the second half of 2007, the average male at age 19 masturbates 7.1 times per week, or about once per day. There were 453 current 19 year olds in the survey. Only 1.55 percent of 19 year olds report masturbating 25 times a week or more.

Q. Does masturbating lead to premature ejaculation in intercourse?

In one sense, that is a tough question since most authorities believe that all males masturbate. Some even say there are no exceptions. So we can't really compare intercourse times of males who masturbate with those who don't. However, we can look at the intercourse times of males arranged by their frequency of masturbation.

According to a survey of over 10,000 males by the web site HealthyStrokes.com in the second half of 2007, the average male takes 15.6 minutes to have intercourse. (N=4868) The survey asked males not only how long they take in intercourse on average, but also how many times they masturbate a week on average. Using a statistical tool called a liner regression, data from this survey show that masturbating more tends to increase one's intercourse time by about 15 seconds per episode of masturbation. This is not a huge time difference, but it shows that masturbating does not make a person come faster. Indeed, it tends to slow them down.

Why would this be the case? It might be that a person who doesn't masturbate much would reach orgasm more quickly because they haven't ejaculated for a while. It tends to take longer to ejaculate the sooner it's been since your last time.

Here are the average intercourse time by weekly masturbation frequency from the HealthyStrokes dataset. You can see how the time increases about a quarter minute for every additional incidence of masturbation and levels off at 6 times per week.

1 time per week, 12.19 minutes, number of respondents =372 males [N=372]
2 times per week, 13.87 minutes, N=521
3 times per week, 14.37 minutes, N=681
4 times per week, 14.97 minutes, N=543
5 times per week, 15.4 minutes, N=732
6 times per week, 16.92 minutes, N=298
7 times per week, 16.88 minutes, N=529
8 times per week, 16.84 minutes, N=148
9 times per week, 17.1 minutes, N=100
10 times per week, 16.67 minutes, N=359

Q. I recently walked in on my son while he was masturbating. I don't want him to be ashamed, but he is. What should I do?

According to a survey of more than 10,000 males by the web site HealthyStrokes.com in the second half of 2007, 46 percent of males have been experienced someone walking in on them unexpectedly while masturbating. However, this has only happened to 33 percent of current 13 year olds.

You might read this web page which is all about being caught: http://www.healthystrokes.com/caught.htm... It has stories from males and females who have been caught and more than a few from people who were embarrassed to walk in on someone else. It might give you ideas about how to handle the situation, and you might even suggest your son read the page so he can see that many other males have been through it and can empathize.

The site also has a page specifically for young males: http://www.healthystrokes.com/young.html

Q. I'm a Christian, and I'm feeling guilty about masturbating. How can I keep from feeling bad about it afterward?

Masturbation is universal among males, no matter what their religion. It is just something that males do. The vast majority of females do it too.

Many Christian theologians have recognized masturbation as something normal and healthy that God wanted us to have and not as something dirty or sinful. You can read some of these comments from theologians at HealthyStrokes.com on the page for Christians.

According to a survey of over 10,000 males by HealthyStrokes.com in the second half of 2007, here is the number of times the average male masturbates a week, by religious group:

Catholic, 6.74
Baptist, 6.47
Pentecostal, 5.72
Other Protestant, 6.16
LDS, 5.53
Non-denominational Christian, 6.34
Other Christian, 7.14
Jewish, 7.61
Muslim, 5.74
Buddhist, 6.83
Hindu, 6.75
Other religions, 7.08
Not religious, 7.29

So whether you masturbate as little as the least frequent religion or as much as the most frequent religion, don't worry! You have a lot of company.

Q. Is masturbating once a day good for your health?

According to a team of doctors in Australia led by Graham Giles, males who masturbated most often when they were in their teens and 20s had the least incidence of prostate cancer later. Dr. Giles recommends that males masturbate at least six times a week.

Desensitization ought not be a worry. According to a survey of over 10,000 males by the web site HealthyStrokes.com in the second half of 2007, the average male who has sex with a partner more than three times a week masturbates on average 7.5 times a week. The number of males in the survey who have that many partner orgasms a week is 1741. But males who only have an orgasm with a partner once a week masturbate 5.4 times per week. Strange as it seems, males who have the most sex also seem to masturbate the most.

So once a day is very good ... and a lot of fun ... and is good exercise for sex!

Q. In recent times, I find that I am masturbating 10-12 times a day. I have also been doing it in places that are not at all private. What will be the impact of my masturbating so often? (age 25)

According to a survey of over 10,000 males by the web site HealthyStrokes.com in the second half of 2007, the average male masturbates 6.78 times per week. If your frequency is to be believed, then you are higher than all but two of the 10,639 males who reported a weekly masturbation frequency.

The average 25-year-old man masturbates 6.15 times per week. There were 260 in the survey.

Something is wrong in your life that is driving you to masturbate that often. It is definitely a compulsion when you are masturbating more than 99.98 percent of males.

The danger from excessive masturbation is not to your penis but to your prostate gland. It may start to manifest itself in pain that seems to be coming from your testicles. If that happens, doctors will put you on antibiotics and anti-inflammatories and mandate bed rest, while insisting that you limit your ejaculation to no more than 3 times per week. That can be tough for a guy, to be stuck in bed and not able to masturbate.

The best way to cut down is to just exercise self-control and limit yourself to a certain number of times. If you really need medical help -- preferably in conjunction with psychotherapy to address why you are masturbating compulsively -- some antidepressants can cause anorgasmia (the inability to have an orgasm). While these can't keep you from masturbating, if you can't have an orgasm, you are certainly less likely to masturbate.

I must also say that you are putting yourself at great risk of trouble with the law by masturbating in public. You are running the risk of being labeled a sex offender. If you ever get caught, do your best to convince the police that you were overcome by a need to masturbate and were not trying to attact a sex partner. (That is why a lot of males masturbate in public, or pretend to.)

Q. Why is masturbation better than sexual intercourse?

Not too many males agree with your assessment. According to a survey of more than 10,000 males by the web site HealthyStrokes.com in the second half of 2007, the average male rated masturbation 8.02 on a scale of 1 to 10 and intercourse 8.82. In fact, a majority of males -- 51 percent -- gave intercourse a 10.

Only 17 percent of males gave masturbation a higher rating.

In a separate question in the same survey, sexually experienced males were asked whether they thought intercourse or masturbating was more fun. 76 percent preferred intercourse and only 24 percent preferred masturbation.

One's sexual preference makes a big difference in that question. These are the percent finding intercourse more fun, broken down by sexual preference:

Exclusively straight, 84 percent
Mostly straight, 69 percent
Bisexual, 53 percent
Mostly gay, 41 percent
Exclusively gay, 44 percent
Confused, 44 percent

Q. What is the longest time the average guy has abstained from masturbating? I have not made it longer than a week.

According to a survey of more than 8000 males by the web site HealthyStrokes.com in the first half of 2007, the average male has gone 31 days without masturbating as the maximum. However, the median was only 12 days. This means that 50 percent of males have gone 12 days or longer and 50 percent have gone 12 days or less. Out of 8644 males who answered that question, only 10 percent claim to have gone more than 50 days.

From that same survey, 41 percent of males have tried to quit masturbating altogether. The median lasted 14 days as a maximum. Among the 59 percent who have not tried to quit, the median is 10 days maximum.

Males who have tried to quit masturbate less than males who have not. The average male who has tried to quit currently masturbates 6.3 times per week, while the average male who has not currently masturbates 6.7 times per week.

They also enjoy it less. The average male who has tried to quit rates masturbation 7.65 on a scale of 1 to 10, while the average male who has not rates it 8.03.

Q. Is it normal to masturbate five times weekly? (age 17)

According to a survey of more than 10,000 males by the web site HealthyStrokes.com in the second half of 2007, which included 681 current 17 year olds, the average 17-year-old male masturbates 7.4 times per week. 70 percent of 17-year-old males masturbate 5 times a week or more.

So you are VERY VERY VERY normal!!!

Q. Is it normal for males to feel pain during coitus?

According to a survey of more than 10,000 males by the web site HealthyStrokes.com in the second half of 2007, 87 percent of sexually experienced males reported never having painful orgasm. Nine percent rarely experienced this, three percent said they have it sometimes, 1/3 of 1 percent said they have painful orgasm most of the time and 1/6 of 1 percent said they experience this almost always. The number of respondents to the painful orgasm question is 4803.

From this we can conclude that painful orgasm is an extremely rare thing for a male to have.

Asked in this same survey to rate intercourse on a scale of 1 to 10, a majority -- 51 percent -- gave it a 10. Another 20 percent gave it a 9, and 14 percent gave it an 8. This means 85 percent of males gave intercourse an 8 or higher out of 10.

By comparison, these same males were asked to rate masturbation on the same scale. Limiting the scope to the sexually experienced males, only 26 percent gave it a 10, 14 percent gave it a 9, and 27 percent gave it an 8, the most common answer. Thus, only two thirds of sexually experienced males gave masturbation an 8 or higher out of 10.

If you have experience masturbating, you can apply your own rating of its capacity for "uninterrupted pleasure for your soul and its organs" and then expect to have it increased when you have intercourse.

Q. The new man in my life, who is 35, is having some trouble with erectile dysfunction. How unusual is this?

It is possible that it is just nerves, but by age 35, I think a man would not be so nervous about having sex, unless he is very inexperienced. A frequent cause of ED in younger males is masturbating in an atypical manner, especially the prone (face down) position. This is a troublesome condition called Traumatic Masturbatory Syndrome, or TMS. It causes severe sexual dysfunction in most males who practice it. The web site HealthyStrokes.com has more information about TMS and how to overcome it.

Other causes of ED in younger males are antidepressants and diabetes.

Viagra might help, but he would need to see a doctor for it anyway, so they could start to rule out those conditions.

According to a survey of over 10,000 males by the web site HealthyStrokes.com in the second half of 2007, among males in their 30s who do not have a history of TMS, the frequency of ED was as follows:

Almost always, 1 percent
Most of the time, 2 percent
Some of the time, 13 percent
Rarely, 32 percent
Never, 52 percent
(N=730)

Among males in their 30s who currently practice TMS, the rate of ED:

Almost always, 6 percent
Most of the time, 10 percent
Some of the time, 14 percent
Rarely, 24 percent
Never, 47 percent
(N=51)

As you can see, the rate of ED among TMS practitioners is about five times higher than for males who have never practiced TMS. It is an important avenue to explore in finding out what is wrong.

Q. Is it true masturbation is positive and not negative?

Yes, those things are all true. Masturbation is a very positive thing. In a recent survey of more than 10,000 males by the web site HealthyStrokes.com, 96.85 percent of males gave masturbation a rating of 5 or higher on a scale of 1 to 10. That many males don't enjoy anything else that much. Not football or video games or eating lobster or even having sex with females. It seems to be the one thing that all guys enjoy.

Q. I get a pain in my prostate gland whenever I have a wet dream. I don't masturbate because it makes my penis feel strange. (age 18)

The most common cause of prostate pain, especially in younger males, is not ejaculating often enough. According to a survey of over 10,000 males by the web site HealthyStrokes.com in the second half of 2007, the average 18-year-old male masturbates 7.7 times per week and has an orgasm with a partner 1.1 times per week. (There were 627 males age 18 in the survey.)

According to the same survey, only 14 percent of 18 year olds still have wet dreams. 44 percent never had them, 31 percent stopped having them when they learned to masturbate, and 11 percent had them for a while afterward.

Frequent adolescent masturbation is also good for your prostate in another way; Dr. Graham Giles of Australia found that males who masturbated most often in their teens and 20s had the least incidence of prostate cancer later. He recommends masturbating at least 6 times per week.

You are supposed to enjoy ejaculating, and most males your age practice it daily or more. Try using different brands and types of lubes (e.g., water based, silicone), and even try it wearing a condom until you can find a method that doesn't irritate you. Most males who get irritated tend to avoid touching their penile head and instead stroke the shaft.

Q. Could any good or harm come from me quitting masturbation?

In addition to being one of the most fun things you can do by yourself, masturbation is useful for preventing prostate cancer. According to research led by Dr. Graham Giles of Australia, males who masturbate most frequently in their teens and 20s have the least incidence of prostate cancer later.

I answer questions about quitting masturbation frequently on my web site HealthyStrokes.com. I recommend that males who want to quit cut back to once a week. You can do that fairly easily. After a month or so of masturbating only once a week, think about if you really want to quit.

According to a survey of over 10,000 males by HealthyStrokes.com in the second half of 2007, 42 percent of males have tried to quit at some point, over 4200 in the survey. Only 60 of those 4200 males claim to have quit successfully.

Q. How popular is masturbation among males?

According to a survey of over 10,000 males by the web site HealthyStrokes.com in the second half of 2007, the average male masturbates 6.78 times per week. Asked to rate the experience on a scale of 1 to 10, the average male gave masturbating a 7.92. That's less than a point less than the average male gave to sexual intercourse, 8.83.

If we assume that males who gave masturbation a rating of 5 or higher like to masturbate, then 96.85 percent of males like to masturbate. That's pretty close to being almost all of them. Do you suppose that many males like or share anything else at that level?

Q. Is it OK for a boy to masturbate at age 10?

According to a survey of over 10,000 males by the web site HealthyStrokes.com in the second half of 2007, 14 percent of males started masturbating when they were age 10 or younger.

According to the same survey, the occurrence of serious sexual dysfunctions, namely erectile dysfunction, anorgasmia, and premature ejaculation is not significantly higher in those males than in other males.

From this we can conclude that masturbating at age 10 is not too early and will not cause any problems!

Q. My boyfriend who is 17 1/2 claims to never masturbate and rarely has sexual fantasies. Could he be suffering from some condition?

According to a survey of over 10,000 males by the web site HealthyStrokes.com in the second half of 2007, the average 17 year old male masturbates 7.37 times per week. There were 681 males age 17 in the survey. Only seven of those 681 claimed to not masturbate.

I would be much more inclined to believe that your boyfriend masturbates frequently but is feeling guilty and/or embarrassed to talk about it. Among 17 year old males who say that their religion is very important to them, 26 percent feel guilty about masturbating all or most of the time.

It might be counterproductive to talk about it more, because if I am right about his masturbating, then he is probably also feeling guilty about not being truthful about it with you. So you would be better off if you didn't ask him about it anymore and just assumed that he masturbates often.

Q. I don't understand what boys need tissue and lotion for when they masturbate. Can you explain?

The lotion is for lubrication. Males masturbate with more force than females, and their parts are bigger, so that means more friction. Lubrication reduces the friction so the male doesn't have to worry as much about chafing his penis (or his hands, lol) and it makes the stroking smoother and more enjoyable.

According to a poll of over 10,000 males by the web site HealthyStrokes.com in the second half of 2007, 54 percent use no lube at all to masturbate. Of the 46 percent who masturbate with lube, 36 percent use a commercial sex lube like Astroglide or K-Y Liquid; 58 percent use a soap or soap-related product, like shampoo or lotion; 43 percent use saliva; and 12 percent use a household oil like vegetable oil. The figures do not add up to 100 percent because some males use more than one kind of lube. The number of males who answered the lube question was 10,375.

The tissue is useful for mopping up semen after masturbating. The volume of ejaculate is only about a teaspoon or so, but it can be spread quite widely. Socks and old shirts are also popular for mopping up, and some males just rub it on their bodies.

Q. I really want to quit masturbating. I feel like it's upsetting my social life. What can I do?

I answer this question frequently on my web site HealthyStrokes.com.

Q. When do males start to feel sexual desire? Not time of day; what grade in school?

According to a survey of over 10,000 males by the web site HealthyStrokes.com in the second half of 2007, the average male started masturbating at age 12.26 years. (Number of respondents = 10,641)

The average male had intercourse for the first time at age 18.29. (Number of respondents =5009)

Only 14 percent of males had masturbated by their 11th birthdays. 13 percent masturbated for the first time when they were 11; 28 percent when they were 12; and 23 percent when they were 13.

Translating this to grades, it looks like most males masturbate for the first time in 6th or 7th grade. The average male is a high school senior or older before having sex.

Q. Is masturbation something normal for a guy to do?

According to a survey of over 10,000 males in the second half of 2007 by the web site HealthyStrokes.com, the average male masturbates 6.78 times per week. Less than 1 percent claimed to not masturbate currently. (Number of respondents=10642)

From the same survey, the average male between the ages of 12 and 17, inclusive, masturbates 7.88 times per week and only 1/2 of 1 percent claimed to not masturbate currently. (Number of respondents=3665).

From this, we can conclude that masturbation for guys is
VERY
VERY
VERY
normal!

Q. At what age do most males start masturbating? How do males feel about pornography?

According to a survey of more than 10,000 males by the web site HealthyStrokes.com in the second half of 2007, the average age at first masturbation is 12.26. (N=10641)

The percentage of males who first masturbated at these ages:
9 or younger, 7.6%
10, 6.5%
11, 13%
12, 27.9%
13, 23.5%
14, 11.8%
15, 5.5%
16, 2.1%
17 or older, 2.2%

With regard to your issue about pornography, you might be interested in this question from a different survey of more than 8000 males for HealthyStrokes.com in the first half of 2007:

How often do you use pictures or videos when you masturbate?

Almost always, 29.2%
Most of the time, 31.1%
Sometimes, 25.9%
Rarely, 8.3%
Never, 5.5%
(N=8746)

Q. What is the rate of masturbation among men?

Some authorities say 100% and that there are no exceptions. According to a survey of more than 10,000 males by the web site HealthyStrokes.com in the second half of 2007, 99.15 percent reported masturbating currently. Limiting the scope to those over 18 (your question refers to "men"), 99 percent report masturbating currently. All of those males report having masturbated in the past.

Q. How safe is vegetable oil as a lube for masturbating?

You are much better off using a lube made especially for sex, like K-Y Liquid or Astroglide. Among males who do not use commercial lubes like those, soap (including related products like shampoo, lotion, and conditioner) and saliva are much more popular as lubes.

According to a poll of over 10,000 males by the web site HealthyStrokes.com in the second half of 2007, 54 percent use no lube at all to masturbate. Of the 46 percent who masturbate with lube, 36 percent use a commercial sex lube, 58 percent use a soap or soap-related product, 43 percent use saliva, and only 12 percent use a household oil like vegetable oil. The figures do not add up to 100 percent because some males use more than one kind of lube. Only 2.7 percent of males only use an oil product. The number of males who answered the lube question was 10,375.

Q. I have masturbated at least once every day since 2004. This is a masturbating streak of over 1000 consecutive days. I feel like I'm the Cal Ripken of masturbation. I have never been sexually active. Is this a good or bad thing? (age 16)

You don't say how much you're masturbating. If it's about once a day, then you're about average for guys your age. In a survey of over 10,000 males by the web site HealthyStrokes.com in the second half of 2007, 16 year old males masturbate on average 7.37 times a week, or about once per day. There were 830 current 16 year olds in the survey.

However, I think that keeping track of it the way you do and trying to continue a daily "streak" points toward compulsive masturbation. You can't have masturbated every single day unless you made a decision that you were going to do so whether you felt like it or not, or had time or not. There must have been some days since 2004 when you were tired or sick or busy or just didn't feel like masturbating. But you did it anyway. How are you going to look for a girlfriend when you realize it's 10 at night and you haven't masturbated yet, so you have to leave the girls that you're around and go home to masturbate?

Someone once wrote in to my web site with details about his daily masturbating over an eight-year period. I went and found that message so I could share details with you. This man had masturbated 3072 times over 2861 days, or about 1.07 times per day. (That's almost the same as the average 16 year old!) However, over a particular 4 1/2 year period for which he had data by day and not only a monthly total, there were 246 days in which he didn't masturbate; 1187 days in which he masturbated once; 243 days in which he did it twice; 24 days in which he did it three times, and only one day in which he did it four times. I told him he was being compulsive by keeping track of it and using it to decide when he masturbated. Even so, he took a break from masturbating about one day in six.

There is nothing wrong with masturbating often, even daily -- 16 percent of 16 year old males in the same survey masturbate 10 times a week or more. But your obsession with keeping track of it and maintaining a streak suggests that you are masturbating compulsively and not because you really want to do it in any particular instance.

Q. How long does it take the average guy to ejaculate?

According to a survey of 10,213 males for the web site HealthyStrokes.com in the second half of 2007, the average time of a masturbating session is 11 minutes and the median time is 7 minutes. 4868 of those males also reported their average intercourse time. It is 15.6 minutes, and the median time is 13 minutes.

However, 44 percent report masturbating in 5 minutes or less, and 24 percent report intercourse in 5 minutes or less. In the survey, which asked males to rate both intercourse and masturbation on scales of 1 to 10, the time spent at either activity was not corrrelated with its rating.

Q. What is the typical average age to begin to masturbate?

According to a survey of 10,641 males by the web site HealthyStrokes.com in the second half of 2007, the average age of first masturbation is 12.26. Whites on average start a little earlier than blacks: 12.2 for whites and 12.81 for blacks.

27 percent first masturbated at age 11 or younger, 28 percent while they were 12, 23 percent while they were 13 (this means 78 percent started masturbating before their 14th birthdays), 12 percent while they were 14, 6 percent while they were 15, and 2 percent while they were 16. So 98 percent were masturbating before their 17th birthdays.

Q. I have never had a wet dream. Am I normal? (age 17)

According to a survey of over 10,000 males done by the web site HealthyStrokes.com in the second half of 2007, 46 percent of current 17 year olds have never had a wet dream. By that measure, you are normal. Another 32 percent used to have wet dreams, but they stopped when the respondents started masturbating. Another 10 percent found their wet dreams lasted for a while after they started masturbating, but then they stopped. Only 12 percent currently have wet dreams. There were 660 males aged 17 in the survey.

Q. Do males masturbate when they wake up in the morning?

According to a survey done in the first half of 2007 for the web site HealthyStrokes.com, an average of 16.3 percent of male masturbation takes place first thing in the morning. This makes it a relatively unpopular time. Nearly half (48.1 percent) takes place at bedtime. The number of males in the survey was 7897.

As a practical matter, if the male in question is not a morning person, he will rarely masturbate in the morning.

Q. What is a healthy number of times for me to masturbate in a week? (age 15)

According to a survey done in the second half of 2007 by the web site HealthyStrokes.com, the average 15-year-old male masturbates 8.17 times per week. There were 950 males age 15 surveyed. 10 percent of 15-year-old males masturbate twice a day or more. More information is available at HealthyStrokes.com.

Dr. Graham Giles of Australia has led research that shows that males who masturbate most often in their teens and 20s have the least incidence of prostate cancer later. He recommends that younger males masturbate at least six times per week.

Q. How long should it take a man to reach orgasm in intercourse?

According to a survey of over 10,000 males by the web site HealthyStrokes.com, the average male takes 15.6 minutes to reach orgasm in intercourse. The number of respondents for that question is 4868.

Q. How do the male reproductive organs get cleaned out?

The ordinary way is through ejaculation. Ejaculation -- most often produced by masturbation, but also available by sex with partners and wet dreams -- not only feels good but eliminates built-up sexual fluids that need to be released.

If a male doesn't ejaculate often enough, these fluids can accumulate in a man's prostate gland and seminal vesicles. This is hard on those organs, because they are designed for being flushed out and not for the long-term storage of fluids. That is one reason why after a few days of not ejaculating, the next ejaculate will seem more yellow than white and often seem like it has solid particles in it. That is built-up semen that has gotten old.

If a man doesn't ejaculate at all, eventually his lymphatic system will start to carry his sexual fluids away. At that point, his sweat will smell like semen. (John Gray, best-selling author of books about relationships shares that from the days when he was a monk.)

According to a survey of over 10,000 males by the web site HealthyStrokes.com in the second half of 2007, the average male who has a partner masturbates 6.24 times per week and has orgasms with partners 3.05 times per week. The average males without a partner masturbates 7.26 times per week.

Those guys don't have to worry about semen getting old inside of them!

Q. What is the rationale for not masturbating face down?

Dylan, masturbating in the face down (prone) position is a troublesome condition called Traumatic Masturbatory Syndrome. It causes severe sexual dysfunction in most males who practice it. The web site HealthyStrokes.com has a lot of information and case studies about TMS and the simple thing you can do to overcome it.

According to a survey of more than 10,000 males by HealthyStrokes.com in the second half of 2007, the average male who currently practices TMS has an orgasm with a partner 1.07 times per week, as opposed to 1.36 times a week for a male who has never practiced TMS. 22.1 percent of males who masturbate prone more than 80 percent of the time have ED most or all of the time they try to have sex, as opposed to only 5.6 percent of males who have never practiced TMS. 31.5 percent of males who masturbate prone more than 80 percent of the time have anorgasmia (no orgasm or very delayed orgasm) most or all of the time they have sex, as opposed to only 7.6 percent of males who never masturbate prone. These figures suggest strongly that masturbating prone is the cause of these men's trouble.

It is likely that masturbating prone provides too much stimulation for the penis, which is not easily replicated in intercourse. Males who switch to a conventional method of masturbating find their erections and their performance in intercourse improves greatly before long.

Q. I am a virgin and didn't do anything to make myself ejaculate in a year until yesterday, and since then my testicle has hurt. Is this OK?

I have to say I find it very hard to believe you went almost a year without masturbating. You obviously have some kind of guilt or embarrassment about it, because you didn't even use the word in your question.

While I still don't believe it was a year, I am willing to believe that you don't masturbate on a daily basis like most guys. (According to a survey of over 10,000 males by the web site HealthyStrokes.com in the second half of 2007, the average virgin male masturbates 7.34 times per week, or more than once a day.)

Ejaculating infrequently is bad for your sexual organs, especially your prostate gland. The most common cause of prostatitis is ejaculating too frequently or not often enough. Pain that seems to be in your testicles often originates in the prostate. This is especially tue if the pain seems to be alternating between testicles.

Frequent masturbation has also been linked with preventing prostate cancer. A team led by Dr. Graham Giles of Australia found that males who masturbated most often in their teens and 20s had the least incidence of prostate cancer later. Dr. Giles recommends that young males masturbate at least six times per week.

According to the same survey from HealthyStrokes.com, the average age at which males became less embarrassed about masturbating is 18.22. I hope you will accept the practice as normal, healthy, and fun soon.

Q. I have been masturbating since I was 9 or 10. Is this OK?

According to a survey of over 10,000 males by the web site HealthyStrokes.com in the second half of 2007, 14.1 percent of males had started masturbating by their 11th birthdays. You were a little bit younger than average, but there is nothing wrong with you.

Don't be surprised if you start having sex a little earlier than other males too. The average male who starts masturbating before his 11th birthday has sex at age 17.5. The average male who starts masturbating at age 11 has sex at age 17.6. The average male who starts masturbating at 12 has sex at age 18.0. The average male who starts masturbating at age 13 has sex at age 18.4. And so it goes. Typically, every year a male goes without learning to masturbate adds .29 years to his age of first intercourse.

Q. What is your opinion about using aloe vera gel to masturbate with?

According to a poll of over 10,000 males by the web site HealthyStrokes.com in the second half of 2007, 54 percent use no lube at all to masturbate. Of the 46 percent who masturbate with lube, 36 percent use a commercial sex lube like Astroglide or K-Y Liquid; 58 percent use a soap or soap-related product, like shampoo or lotion; 43 percent use saliva; and 12 percent use a household oil like vegetable oil. The figures do not add up to 100 percent because some males use more than one kind of lube. The number of males who answered the lube question was 10,375.

I really suggest buying a lube made especially for sex, like Astroglide or K-Y Liquid. No one will think anything of you buying it. You can buy it in a store like Target where the cashier isn't paying attention to you anyhow, or you can buy it in a store that has self-service checkout.

Not only is it better because it is made especially for sexual purposes, you will also feel special buying and using something made especially for it.

Q. I am desperate to have a wet dream! Can you tell me when it will happen?

You don't say how old you are, but there's a chance you never will. According to a survey of over 10,000 males by the web site HealthyStrokes.com in the second half of 2007, 40 percent of males have never had a wet dream. Of those who had, the majority of them -- 54.9 percent -- stopped having them when they learned to masturbate. 20.8 percent continued having them for a while after masturbating, but only 24.3 percent currently have them.

Q. It feels necessary to stretch my legs out when I masturbate. Is this normal?

According to a survey of more than 10,000 males by the web site HealthyStrokes.com in the second half of 2007, 19.3 percent of males always stretch out their legs tense while masturbating, another 20.6 percent do it most of the time. So that's almost 40 percent who do it the majority of the time they masturbate. More than half of males -- 50.4 percent -- do it some of the time. Only 9.7 percent of males say they never do it.

So this is normal!!! However, it would be good for you to learn to masturbate without doing that every time. As indicated, only a fifth of males do it almost every time.

Q. It takes me 10 minutes to ejaculate when masturbating and I'm not sure I'm doing it correctly, because the feeling in my penis is very intense. (age 19)

Your time to ejaculation is exactly normal. According to a survey of over 10,000 males by the web site HealthyStrokes.com in the second half of 2007, the average male takes 11 minutes to masturbate. 10,213 answered that question. Of them, 434 were age 19, and they took 11.3 minutes on average.

It should feel very, very good to ejaculate. If it doesn't, you might be ejaculating but not having an orgasm. Every male occasionally ejaculates without orgasm, and most would describe it like you do, as neither painful nor enjoyable. You could have a rare orgasmic disorder that would require examination by a doctor and possibly a urologist. A common cause of that kind of disorder is the use of prescription drugs. If you are taking some kind of prescription (and have been using it for a long time), you might tell your doctor and get him or her to prescribe a brand that doesn't cause sexual side effects.

In the meantime, I recommend continuing to masturbate. Do it while you are relaxed, and do your best to enjoy the orgasm. In any case, enjoy the feelings you get that lead up to ejaculation. You will be glad you did.

Q. I tend to scratch my penis when I masturbate and it hurts, so I only do it a couple times a week. My orgasms only last for 10 seconds. Am I normal? (age 12 and 10 months)

The typical orgasm only lasts 8 seconds. If you're lasting 10, you're doing better than most guys. The usual cure for irritating the sensitive skin of the penis is to use lube. Most guys start with a household product like lotion or petroleum jelly, but the best lube for masturbating is a water-based product made especially for sex like Astroglide or K-Y Liquid.

It might also be as simple as cutting and filing your fingernails more often.

According to a survey of over 10,000 males by the web site HealthyStrokes.com in the second half of 2007, the average 13 year old male (you'll be one in 2 months) masturbates 8.11 times per week. The median 12-year-old male takes 5 minutes to masturbate to orgasm.

So just find a way to not scratch yourself, and you'll be fine!

Q. What kind of sex should I have had by the age of 15?

According to a survey of over 10,000 males by the web site HealthyStrokes.com in the second half of 2007, which included 950 males who were currently 15, the average 15 year old male masturbates 8.17 times per week. Five of six are not having sex with partners at all. The average 15 year old male has an orgasm with a partner 0.58 times per week, and those having more than zero have on average 3.49 such orgasms per week.

Only 9.8 percent of 15 year old males have experienced vaginal intercourse. 56 percent were planning to wait for a special partner, and only 29 percent were looking to become sexually active ASAP.

49 percent of 15 year old males have had a wet dream, although only 10 percent were currently having them. 32.7 percent said their wet dreams stopped when they started masturbating, and another 6.3 percent said they had them for a while after learning to masturbate, but they had since stopped having them.

According to a different survey of more than 8000 males by HealthyStrokes.com in the first half of 2007, which included 792 males currently age 15, 27.1 percent had experienced manual intercourse, commonly called a "hand job"; 17.3 percent had experienced oral intercourse; 0.5 percent had experienced anal intercourse with a female; and 0.5 percent had experienced anal intercourse with a male.

In summary, at age 15, your sex life should consist of frequent encounters with your hand.

Q. Are most males in the US circumcised or uncircumcised?

According to a survey of more than 10,000 males by the web site HealthyStrokes.com in the second half of 2007, 77 percent of US males are circumcised. This compares with only 50 percent circumcised in Canada, 41 percent in Latin America/Caribbean, 18 percent in Europe, 44 percent in Asia, 48 percent in Africa, and 35 percent in Australia/New Zealand.

There is also a marked difference by age group. These data are for males in the US:

Under 18, 72 percent circumcised (N=2095)
18-24, 75 percent (N=1421)
25-29, 82 percent (N=476)
30-34, 87 percent (N=335)
35-39, 85 percent (N=381)
40-44, 89 percent (N=390)
45-49, 85 percent (N=375)
50-59, 82 percent (N=451)
60-69, 72 percent (N=266)
70-79, 57 percent (N=81)
80 and over, 35 percent (N=17)

Males who are unsure of their status are excluded from these data.

Q. I masturbate every other day and am worried about it becoming an addiction. Will it hurt my guitar playing skills? (age 17)

According to a survey of over 10,000 males by the web site HealthyStrokes.com in the second half of 2007, the average 17 year old male (of which there were 681 in the survey) masturbates 7.37 times per week, or more than once per day. You are only masturbating half as often. I find it very hard to believe you are having a problem.

Since most authorities believe that all men masturbate (some say there are no exceptions), it follows that all successful guitar players (and piano players and violinists and cellists and saxophonists) masturbate too. There is no reason to worry that you are hurting your playing ability.

Q. I am 14 and was doing that thing that a lot of 14 year old guys do in private, and my 16 year old brother walked in. What should I do?

The first thing you have to do is learn to say the word MASTURBATE. It's easy. Let's all say it right now. MASTURBATE!

Good. Now we have a vocabulary we can use to discuss your brother walking in on you while you were masturbating. He didn't say anything, and he is the older one. So I don't think you need to say anything either. However, please read the page linked below for some tips other males and females have offered after they had to deal with someone walking in on them while they were masturbating.

According to a survey of more than 10,000 males by the web site HealthyStrokes.com in the second half of 2007, 45.8 percent of males have been caught masturbating at least once. So who caught them? Out of 10,306 males who answered the caught question, 1780 (17.2 percent) were caught by mothers, 1021 (9.9 percent) by fathers, 964 (9.4 percent) by brothers, 748 (7.3 percent) by sisters, 1440 (13.9 percent) by a same sex friend, 492 (4.8 percent) by an opposite sex friend, 420 (4 percent) by a same sex relative, 284 (2.8 percent) by an opposite sex relative, 956 (9.3 percent) by a wife, 795 (7.7 percent) by a heterosexual girlfriend, 248 (2.4 percent) by a gay boyfriend.

Most males who get caught have only one class of person catch them. However, a few people have been caught by 8, 9, 10, or even 11 different kinds of people. I wonder if they're trying to get people to "catch" them masturbating.

Q. Can I bring on a wet dream by not masturbating regularly?

According to a survey of over 10,000 males by the web site HealthyStrokes.com in the second half of 2007, only 60 percent of males have ever had a wet dream. The age at which one starts masturbating makes a lot of difference. The average age of first masturbation for the males who have never had a wet dream is 11.94. For males who have had one, the average age of first masturbation is 12.45.

Among males who have had a wet dream, 54.9 percent stopped having them when they learned to masturbate. For another 20.8 percent, they continued for a while, but only 24.3 percent of males still have them.

For males who have them, they come about once every 10 days. There is no consistency to this; a male might have them two days in a row and then not again for a month.

Some authorities believe there is some cardinal frequency of masturbation that inhibits wet dreams forever. That is to say, even if you have them twice a month before you start masturbating, if you stop masturbating, you will not be likely to start having wet dreams again.

Q. How much sex would you expect a 60 year old man to have?

According to a survey of over 10,000 males by the web site HealthyStrokes.com in the second half of 2007, which included 388 currently sexually active males between the ages of 55 and 65, inclusive, the average sexually active 55-65 YO male has sex with a partner 2.7 times per week. 64 percent of males in this age bracket are free of erectile dysfunction; 69 percent do not have problems with anorgasmis; and most rarely or never have premature ejaculation.

You might put stereotypes aside and decide that an older man can show you a better time than a relatively inexperienced man your own age.

Q. What is a wet dream, and is it as much fun as masturbating?

A wet dream, or nocturnal emission, is an orgasm with ejaculation that a male has while he is asleep. According to a survey of over 10,000 males by the web site HealthyStrokes.com in the second half of 2007, only 60 percent of males have ever had a wet dream. Of them, 55 percent stopped having wet dreams when they learned to masturbate. Another 21 percent continued having wet dreams for a while after they learned to masturbate, and 24 percent claim to still have them.

However, wet dreams are not always popular. Of those males who have had one, 30 percent would prefer to never have them. Another 18 percent would like to have one every night. 60 percent of males who have had wet dreams prefer masturbating and only 9 percent prefer wet dreams. 31 percent like them equally well.

The link below is to a page on HealthyStrokes.com that is specifically about wet dreams.

Q. Mormons are opposed to masturbating, but does that mean they do it any less?

According to a survey of over 10,000 males by the web site HealthyStrokes.com in the second half of 2007, which included 148 Mormons, the average Mormon masturbates 5.53 times per week. Unmarried Mormons masturbate on average 6.74 times per week, which is not much different from the average of 6.78 times per week in the overall male population.

A higher percentage of Mormon males have tried to quit masturbating than any other religious group. 76% have tried to stop, as opposed to 42% of Catholics, 47% of Baptists, 36% of non-Baptist Protestants (Methodists, Lutherans, Presbyterians, Episcopalians, Congregationists), 34% of Jews, and only 29% of the non-religious.

Q. How often do men in their 20s masturbate?

According to a survey of 10,000 men conducted earlier this year on the web site http://www.healthystrokes.com, the average male aged 20-29 masturbates 6.84 times per week.

Q. If I quit masturbating, will that increase my testosterone levels and make me smarter?

You haven't been told the truth. Masturbating does not increase or decrease your testosterone levels. Avoiding it won't make you smarter. According to a survey of over 4500 males for the web site www.healthystrokes.com, The average male high school dropout masturbates 5.75 times a week, while the average male college graduate masturbates 5.85 times a week.

Q. Why is it harder for me to masturbate left handed? I am right handed.

It's because your right hand is stronger and it's easier for you to do things in automatic fashion with it. According to a survey of 10,000 males done this year by the web site http://www.healthystrokes.com, about half of males masturbate with their dominant hand. 37 percent of righties and 30 percent of lefties masturbate with both (switching). Interestingly, there are more lefties (22 percent) who masturbate right handed than righties (12 percent) who masturbate left handed.

You should do it in a way that is enjoyable for you. However, if you really want to start switching hands, I suggest you try masturbating left sometime when you're really turned on or when it's been a few days since your last orgasm. It will be easier for you to come with the other hand then.

Q. How often do males 16-25 typically masturbate? Do they think it is any good?

According to a survey done in the second half of 2007 by the web site HealthyStrokes.com, the average male between the ages of 16 and 25, inclusive, masturbates 7.17 times per week. The number of respondents was 4404.

These same males rated their masturbation experience an average of 7.59 on a scale of 1 to 10, so I would say they think it is VERY GOOD!

Q. Is it OK that I'm turning 16 soon and still don't masturbate?

According to the web site HealthyStrokes.com, four percent of males didn't start masturbating until after their 16th birthdays. When you get an erection, try to think of whatever makes you most excited and stroke your penis rapidly (about twice a second). It's OK if it takes you more than one try to be able to do it to orgasm. The thing to think about is whatever makes you most likely to get an erection.

Q. Does high testosterone mean a man has a deeper voice? Does it mean anything in terms of sex? What about penis size?

Penis size is genetic and unrelated to the amount of testosterone a man produces.

A lower voice tends to indicate higher levels of testosterone. A survey for the web site HealthyStrokes.com in the second half of 2007 asked males to rate whether their voices are higher, lower, or about in the middle relative to other males their age. Several other measures in the survey produced results consistent with the idea that a lower voice is associated with higher testosterone.

Age of first masturbation:
Higher voice, 12.22
Medium voice, 12.31
Lower voice, 11.98

Age of first intercourse
Higher voice, 19.12
Medium voice, 18.31
Lower voice, 17.92

Current weekly masturbation frequency
Higher voice, 6.96
Medium voice, 6.66
Lower voice, 7.21

Mean number of female partners per year, based on number of years since first intercourse
High voice, 0.87
Medium voice, 0.83
Lower voice, 0.95

Mean times intercourse per week when in a relationship
Higher voice, 3
Medium voice, 3.24
Lower voice, 3.64

Number of respondents in the survey:
Higher voice, 863
Medium voice, 7708
Lower voice, 1776

Of course, this measures the influence of testosterone indirectly and relies on self-assessment of one's voice, but it would be extremely expensive to do a study of that number of respondents using blood tests, etc.

Q. I take 8 minutes to reach orgasm when I masturbate if I'm not using porn and only 5 minutes when I am. Is this normal? (age 15)

According to survey of males done by the web site HealthyStrokes.com in the second half of 2007, the average 15-year-old takes 8.95 minutes to masturbate. More than half take 5 minutes or less. So you are right around normal! This table illustrates how males generally take longer to masturbate to orgasm as they get older:

Age Avg. time (minutes)
13 7.96
14 8.31
15 8.95
16 10.44
17 10.73
18 11.22
19 11.34
20-29 11.18
30-39 11.81
40-49 12.91
50-59 13.79
60+ 12.59

The number of males in the survey is 10,213.

Q. Is sex different from masturbating?

In a survey done in the second half of 2007 by the web site HealthyStrokes.com, males were asked to rate both masturbation and intercourse on a scale of 1 to 10. About 4950 males had done both. These males rated intercourse an average of 8.83 and masturbation an average of 8.02.

If the analysis is limited to exclusively straight males only, the difference is even greater with intercourse being rated 9.01 and masturbation being rated 7.81. (Number of respondents=3235)

Note that 8 of 10 is still a pretty good rating. This means that males really enjoy both masturbating and intercourse, but intercourse a little bit more.

Q. Does masturbating too much make you blind?

In the second half of 2007, a survey of 10,452 males by the web site HealthyStrokes.com found that all of them masturbated -- an average of 6.78 times per week -- and all of them could see well enough to complete the online survey.

Q. What is the normal ejaculatory frequency of a man from 20-30?

According to a survey done in the second half of 2007 by the web site HealthyStrokes.com, the average male aged 20-30 masturbates 6.8 times per week and has an orgasm with a partner 1.65 times per week, a total of 8.45 times per week. The number of respondents was 2597.

Q. Does masturbating less mean you will be able to last longer in sex?

No. It is kind of the opposite. Masturbating more will tend to increase the amount of time it takes you to reach orgasm in intercourse. According to a survey of more than 10,000 males by the web site HealthyStrokes.com in the second half of 2007, this is how long 4897 sexually experienced males said it takes them to reach orgasm in intercourse based on how many times a week they currently masturbate:

0, 13.8 minutes (Number of respondents =48)
1, 12.2 minutes (N=373)
2, 13.9 minutes (N=521)
3, 14.4 minutes (N=681)
4, 14.9 minutes (N=545)
5, 15.4 minutes (N=735)
6, 16.8 minutes (N=302)
7, 16.9 minutes (N=532)
8, 16.8 minutes (N=148)
9, 17.1 minutes (N=101)
10, 16.6 minutes (N=360)
11-15, 19.1 minutes (N=309)
16+, 19.2 minutes (N=243)

The pattern is fairly clear. Masturbating more increases the amount of time necessary to reach orgasm in intercourse. In fact, in can be reduced to a regression formula: Starting with a base of 14.1 minutes, each weekly incidence of masturbation increases intercourse time by 15 seconds.

Q. When does the male sex drive decline? (late 30s)

According to a survey of over 10,000 males by the web site HealthyStrokes.com, the average male has 7.5 orgasms a week or more through age 40. From age 41 to 50, inclusive, this drops to 7.32 times per week. Here is the breakdown in number of orgasms per week by half decade and the number of respondents in each age group:

Age 10-14, 9.2 (N=1131)
15-19, 8.41 (N=3335)
20-24, 8.41 (N=1468)
25-29, 8.69 (N=862)
30-34, 8.26 (N=573)
35-39, 7.94 (N=545)
40-44, 7.45 (N=545)
45-49, 7.5 (N=505)
50-54, 7.06 (N=346)
55-59, 6.53 (N=296)
60-64, 6.5 (N=222)
65-69, 5.38 (N=136)
70-74, 5.38 (N=68)
75-79, 4.68 (N=38)
80-84, 4.93 (N=14)

Among males in your age group (35-39, inclusive), the average married man (N=267) has 7.18 orgasms per week; the average divorced man (N=56) has 9.11; the average never-married man (N=204) has 8.67.

I think you are pretty normal.

Q. I have only masturbated once and not felt like doing it again since. Am I normal? (age 17)

No, that is not normal. According to a survey of over 10,000 males by the web site HealthyStrokes.com in the second half of 2007, which included 682 males currently age 17, the average 17 year old male masturbates 7.39 times per week. That's more than once a day. The average 17 year old started masturbating at age 12.3 and has masturbated 1889 times. You have a long way to go to catch up to the average guy!

I would be interested to know how often you have wet dreams. Conventional wisdom says that teenage guys who don't masturbate have them about every 10 days. That is a lot less ejaculating than the average 17 year old male, who, as indicated, masturbates 10.56 times in that time span, and that doesn't include what orgasms he may be having with partners.

The same survey found that 60 percent of males prefer masturbating to wet dreams and only 9 percent prefer wet dreams to masturbating. 31 percent like them equally well.

You owe it yourself to give masturbating another try.

Q. Can you run out of semen? Is there a limit to the number of times you can ejaculate in your life?

Like any other bodily fluid, semen replenishes itself. You cannot run out of semen any more than you can run out of tears or saliva or stomach acid.

According to a survey of over 8,000 males by the web site HealthyStrokes.com in the first half of 2007, the median male reported masturbating 1200 times in his life. Among men over 40, the median man reported masturbating 7000 times.

A separate survey of 10,000 males by HealthyStrokes.com in the second half of 2007 asked males the age of first masturbation, current age, age of first intercourse, weekly masturbatory frequency, and weekly orgasms with partner frequency. If we extrapolate this information straightline over the entire period the male has been masturbating and having intercourse (which might not be valid assumptions, but they are what this dataset can do), we find that these results for average lifetime ejaculation by age:

Age 18, 2397 times (Number of respondents=627)
Age 20, 2981 (N=344)
Age 25, 4618 (N=260)
Age 30, 6723 (N=135)
Age 35, 8269 (N=126)
Age 40, 10650 (N=151)
Age 50, 12286 (N=98)
Age 60, 15199 (N=80)
Age 70, 15885 (N=21)
Age 80-88 19401 (N=21)

These estimates are probably on the high side, but they illustrate that for plenty of men, it is not unusual to have ejaculated more than 10,000 times.

Q. I am 23 and masturbate constantly. Way more than a few times a day. It is affecting my life. What can I do?

It's normal to masturbate, but your frequency is extreme. If your frequency of five times an hour (sometimes) is correct, then I suggest getting professional help from a competent psychotherapist, preferably one experienced in dealing with sexual compulsivity. He would treat you for obsessive-compulsive disorder. You can ask your regular doctor for a referral or start by finding a sex therapist in your area at the AASECT web site. http://www.aasect.org/directory.asp

According to a survey of over 10,000 males by the web site HealthyStrokes.com in the second half of 2007, the average 23 year old male masturbates 7.2 times per week. There were 282 males age 23 in the survey. The average 23 year old male who is sexually active masturbates only 6.4 times per week. Perhaps it would give you inspiration to try to be like them.

Q. I have never had a wet dream. Is this normal? (age 19)

According to a survey of over 10,000 males by the web site HealthyStrokes.com in the second half of 2007, which included 439 current 19 year olds, 46 percent of 19 year old males have never had a wet dream. Among 19 year old males who have had a wet dream, 54 percent stopped having them when they learned to masturbate. For 19 percent, the wet dreams continued for a while after that but then stopped.

So, having a wet dream is not all that common at age 19, especially if you have other ways of having orgasms. It does not mean you are underdeveloped or that anything is wrong with you.

Q. How do guys typically learn how to masturbate?

According to a survey of over 8,000 males by the web site HealthyStrokes.com in the first half of 2007, 73.1 percent of males learned to masturbate by self-discovery. 19.7 percent learned from another person, like a brother or friend, and 7.1 percent learned from a book or movie or other media.

The males who learn from media start masturbating a little later than the others.

So almost three out of four males learn by themselves.

Q. What does the pitch of your voice mean for your sexuality? Does it make a difference in the size of your penis?

No, but it correlates with a lot of other things.

According to a survey of over 10,000 males by the web site HealthyStrokes.com in the second half of 2007, males were asked to classify their voice into "higher than average for males my age," "in the middle among males my age," and "lower than average for males my age."

In terms of age at first masturbation:
higher, 12.21
middle, 12.31
lower, 11.98

Weekly masturbation frequency:
higher, 6.96
middle, 6.66
lower, 7.21

Age at first intercourse:
higher, 19.12
middle, 18.31
lower, 17.92

How many times do you have orgasms with partners in a week?
higher, 1.09
middle, 1.35
lower, 1.39

Female partners per year since 1st intercourse
higher, .87
middle, .83
lower, .95

Time to masturbate (duration)
higher, 10.66 minutes
middle, 11.06 minutes
lower, 11.4 minutes

Average rating of masturbation on a 1-10 scale
higher, 7.8
middle, 7.95
lower, 7.87

Average rating of intercourse on a 1-10 scale
higher, 8.54
middle, 8.85
lower, 8.83

higher, 17.8
middle, 18.4
lower, 17.7

Q. I am a mother of several boys, and my oldest is 10. I am wondering when I can expect them to start touching their penises for sexual pleasure and how I would go about discussing this with them.

According to a survey of over 10,000 males by the web site HealthyStrokes.com in the second half of 2007, 7.8 percent of males started masturbating before the age of 10, and another 6.5 percent started at age 10. These males are starting earlier than normal. 13 percent start at age 11, 28 percent at age 12, meaning that a majority of males have started masturbating by their 13th birthdays. Another 23 percent start at age 13, 12 percent at age 14, and the rest are late bloomers in the same way the early boys you ask about are early bloomers.

I have no doubt that your eldest and his younger brothers will start masturbating soon. Most teenage boys are very attentive about concealing their semen from their mothers, although a few don't care and just let it lie where it lands.

You seem to be an unlikely candidate for discussing this with your boys, since you could not even bring yourself to use the word "masturbate" in your question. Is the boys' father available for this discussion? I suggest you print out "A Young Man's Guide to Masturbation" from the web site HealthyStrokes.com and give it to your son.

Q. I'm a girl and I hear a lot about guys masturbating once a day or more. How long does it take them, and how do they make time for this?

According to a survey of over 10,000 males by the web site HealthyStrokes.com in the second half of 2007, 42 percent of males masturbate seven times a week or more. The average male who masturbates at least seven times a week takes 11.4 minutes to masturbate. The median time is 8 minutes.

8 minutes is not such a long time that a male would have time fitting it in. According to a different survey of over 8000 males by the web site HealthyStrokes.com in the first half of 2007, 48 percent of all masturbation by males who masturbate at least 7 times a week is done at bedtime, and another 18 percent is done first thing in the morning. Thus, two thirds of masturbation by males who masturbate daily takes place alongside sleeping. These guys certainly enjoy what they're doing as much as 8-10 extra minutes of sleep!

Q. What are some strange places where guys masturbate?

According to a survey of over 10,000 males by the web site HealthyStrokes.com in the second half of 2007, 54 percent of males have masturbated in a public place. Of these, 27 percent have only masturbated in their cars. 73 percent have masturbated in places with even less privacy.

Most frequently cited places besides cars are school, park, work, woods, bathroom, beach, library, airplane, gym, and mall.

Some unfrequently cited places are amusement park, apartment balcony, church, class, a changing room at Kmart, and the Great Barrier Reef. It might be that if you can think of a private or semi-private place, someone has masturbated there.

Q. I reach orgasm in only 2 minutes when I masturbate. How can I take longer? Will it be any different when I am older?

Just work at slowly extending it. If you take 2 minutes now, work on taking 2 minutes and 30 seconds. Then go to 3 minutes, and so on. You will do better with more practice. Males tend to take longer in masturbating as they get older.

According to a survey of over 10,000 males by the web site HealthyStrokes.com in the second half of 2007, here is average masturbation time broken down by age:

12, 7.89 minutes
13, 7.64 minutes
14, 8.37 minutes
15, 9.05 minutes
16, 10.44 minutes
17, 10.73 minutes
18, 11.22 minutes
19, 11.34 minutes
20, 10.95 minutes
21, 10.83 minutes
22-29 inclusive, 11.3 minutes
30-39, 11.8 minutes
40-49, 12.9 minutes
50-59, 13.8 minutes
60+, 12.96 minutes

Q. I find I masturbate a lot when I feel stressed. Is this normal at my age? I'm in my late 40s.

According to a survey of over 10,000 males by the web site HealthyStrokes.com in the second half of 2007, the average male in the 45-49 age group (of which there were 524) masturbates 5.52 times per week.

Most males find that masturbation helps them reduce stress and anxiety. What you are doing is very normal.

Q. I have trouble concentrating when I masturbate and wonder if masturbating is messing up my mind and making me do more poorly in school.

According to a survey of over 10,000 males by the web site HealthyStrokes.com in the second half of 2007, the average college graduate (2084 men) masturbates 5.82 times per week. The average man who has been to graduate or professional school (919 men) masturbates 5.58 times per week, and the average medical doctor (25 men) masturbates 5.72 times per week.

Masturbating didn't wreck these men's chances of excelling in school. You shouldn't believe it will hurt yours either.

Q. What is a safe frequency for me to masturbate at? (age 15)

According to a survey of more than 10,000 males by the web site HealthyStrokes.com in the second half of 2007, which included 950 current 15 year olds, the average male 15 year old masturbates 8.17 times per week, or more than once a day. If you're like them, then you're pretty safe.

Many males masturbate a lot more than the average. 28 percent of 15 year olds masturbate 10 times a week or more.

Q. How much masturbating is normal before it gets out of hand? I mean, over the top? (age 13)

According to a survey of over 10,000 males by the web site HealthyStrokes.com in the second half of 2007, which included 383 13 year old boys, the average 13 year old male masturbates 8.11 times per week. That's more than once a day.

Only one of those 13 year old boys claimed to not masturbate. 18 percent of them masturbate 10 or more times a week. I would find it hard to say that 18 percent are over the top. The 95th percentile of 13 year old boys masturbates 16 times a week, or more than twice a day. Perhaps that's where over the top is.

Q. Is it sick to use a condom to masturbate? Can you get an STD from reusing it?

It is not sick at all. According to a survey of more than 8000 males by the web site HealthyStrokes.com in the first half of 2007, 35 percent of males have used a condom to masturbate. Nine percent use them at least some of the time (26 percent say only "rarely"), but only 1.4 percent of males use them most of the time. I suspect that some of the 65 percent who say they never masturbate with condoms have tried it at least once.

You obviously cannot get an STD from yourself. Of course, this does not mean that you want to come into contact with old semen. You could probably get away with rinsing out the condom and reusing it a couple of times -- there was a time when sex instruction manuals showed people how to do this for actual sex -- but this might take some of the fun out of it.

Some of the reasons for using condoms for masturbating that males cite is that it adds a layer of stimulation (i.e., instead of just hand against penis, you have hand against condom AND condom against penis), that it makes it easier to masturbate when the penis is sore or sensitive from some earlier rough activity, and that it just seems sexy to use a condom. However, I think the main reason is that it contains the semen. Some males are self-conscious about going out with ejaculate on them so a condom lessens the chance of getting semen someplace where someone could see or smell it.

Good luck to you. You're getting good practice at putting condoms on.

Q. How often do males masturbate? Does it differ by religion?

According to a survey of over 10,000 males by the web site HealthyStrokes.com in the second half of 2007, the average male masturbates 6.78 times per week.

Here is the weekly frequency by religion from the same survey:

Catholic, 6.7
Baptist, 6.5
Pentecostal, 5.7
Other protestant, 6.2
LDS, 5.5
Non-denominational Christian, 6.3
Other Christian, 7.1
Jewish, 7.6
Muslim, 5.7
Buddhist, 6.8
Hindu, 6.7
Other religion, 7.1
No religion, 7.3

Sikhs are nominally higher than these other groups (7.8), but there were only 18 of them in the survey, so I left them out of this table.

Q. How often do 14 year old boys masturbate?

According to a survey of over 10,000 males by the web site HealthyStrokes.com in the second half of 2007, which included 714 males currently age 14, the average 14 year old male masturbates 8.39 times per week. That's more than once a day. Only two claimed to not masturbate.

20 percent of 14 year old males -- one in five -- masturbate 10 times a week or more. And 1 percent claim to masturbate 4 times a day or more.

I don't know if it's the best number, but the most common answer was 7. If you masturbate once a day or so, you have LOTS and LOTS and LOTS of company!!!

Q. Do 16 year old boys masturbate? Why don't they talk about it?

And how!!!

According to a survey of over 10,000 males by the web site HealthyStrokes.com in the second half of 2007, which included 830 males age 16, the average 16 year old masturbates 7.37 times per week.

They don't talk about it because it is very private. Even adults don't talk about it much. At 16, many (not most) males are still very embarrassed about masturbating. Most adult males say they didn't start feeling less embarrassed about masturbating until they were 18. (According to the same HealthyStrokes survey.)

Males talk about sex frequently with their male friends, but in the teen years, even males who are very bold in speaking about real and imagined acts of intercourse are often strangely silent when it comes to masturbation. However, this doesn't mean they are not doing it.

Masturbation seems to be the one thing most enjoyed by males, whether they are old or young, straight or gay, white or black, rich or poor. According to the same survey, 63 percent of 16-year-old males gave masturbation a rating of 8 or higher on a scale of 1 to 10.

So don't expect them to tell you they do. Just smile at them, because now you know what they do, in most cases every day of the week.

Q. What percent of males are circumcised? By religious group? (age 16)

According to a survey of over 10,000 males by the web site HealthyStrokes.com in the second half of 2007, here are the percent of males who are circumcised in various groups:

Total survey, 61.8 percent

Catholic, 61.5 percent
Baptist, 78.2 percent
Pentecostal, 70.4 percent
Other protestant, 70.8 percent
LDS Mormon, 81 percent
Non-denominational Christian, 73.4 percent
Other Christian, 57.8 percent
Jewish, 96.8 percent
Muslim, 89.3 percent
Buddhist, 31.7 percent
Hindu, 15.8 percent
Sikh, 12.5 percent
Other religion, 55.5 percent
no religion, 52.7 percent

Northeast US, 75.7 percent
Midwest US, 79.6 percent
Southern US, 78.6 percent
Western US, 74.9 percent
Canada, 49.8 percent
Latin America/Caribbean, 41 percent
Europe, 18.2 percent
Asia, 44 percent
Africa, 47.9 percent
Australia/New Zealand, 34.6 percent
Other, 43 percent

White, 65 percent
Black, 71 percent
Asian/Pacific, 40.6 percent
Hispanic, 39.7 percent
Middle Eastern, 85.2 percent
Mixed/other, 59.2 percent

Q. What will happen to a guy who masturbates daily for three years and seven months?

The only thing we can say for sure is that he or she will be three years and seven months older. The average teenage and young adult male masturbates daily. According to a survey of over 10,000 males by the web site HealthyStrokes.com in the second half of 2007, the average male starts masturbating daily at the age of 12 and doesn't fall below an average of seven times a week until he's 24.

That's a lot of males who masturbate daily. Probably most of them your age. Be glad you're one of them.

Q. How usual is it for a guy to be caught masturbating, and who catches him?

According to a survey of over 10,000 males by the web site HealthyStrokes.com in the second half of 2007, 45.8 percent of males have been caught masturbating. Here is who caught them:

Mother, 37.7 percent
Father, 21.6 percent
Sister, 15.8 percent
Brother, 20.4 percent
Male friend, 30.5 percent
Female friend, 10.4 percent
Other male relative, 8.9 percent
Other female relative, 6 percent
Wife, 35.4 percent of men who have been married
Girlfriend, 16.9 percent of straight & bisexual males
Boyfriend, 23.2 percent of gay & bisexual males
Other person, 4 percent

These figures do not sum to 100 percent because some people have been caught by more than one type of person.

Q. My boyfriend says he masturbates every night to help him sleep. He says it makes the blood go down. What does he mean? I have no idea what he is talking about. Can you explain? Why would he have to do that every night?

Masturbating is stimulation of one's own genitals for the purpose of advancing sexual arousal, usually to the point of orgasm.

Your boyfriend does it nightly but he obviously is not shedding blood through his penis. He probably means he has a strong erection at bedtime or shortly after (which means a lot of blood has flowed to his genitals; blood is what makes the penis erect), and by masturbating, he is causing this blood to go to other parts of his body. If he has been having erections during the day, and they have not been relieved by ejaculation, the blood can cause a congested feeling in the genitals. He is probably referring to this blood.

Of course, orgasm leads naturally to sleep for most males. According to a survey of over 8000 males by the web site HealthyStrokes.com in the first half of 2007, 48 percent of masturbation takes place at bedtime.

So masturbating at bedtime is not only healthy, fun, and very, very normal, it helps him get to sleep.

Q. Is there a relationship between how quickly you reach orgasm in masturbation and having premature ejaculation in intercourse? I've never had intercourse, but I take anywhere from 5 to 15 minutes to masturbate to orgasm.

According to a survey of over 10,000 males by the web site HealthyStrokes.com in the second half of 2007, this is the average masturbation time reported by males who claimed to have premature ejaculation in intercourse:

Almost always (have PE), 10.2 minutes
Most of the time, 9.3 minutes
Sometimes, 10.9 minutes
Rarely, 12.5 minutes
Never, 14.4 minutes

If there is a relationship, it is a very tiny one.

However, looking at the data the other way (analyzing PE by masturbation time) lets us answer the question a little differently. Here are the percentage of males reporting PE most of the time (or almost always) by average masturbation time:

1 minute, 42 percent
2 minutes, 23.5 percent
3 minutes, 17.4 percent
4-8 minutes, 13.1 percent
10-12 minutes, 8.8 percent
13-16 minutes, 6.6 percent
17-20 minutes, 6.1 percent

These data suggest that you are unlikely to have PE in intercourse. The males who are most at risk for PE are those who masturbate to orgasm in a minute or two on average. Taking from 5-15 minutes suggests that PE is not likely to be a problem for you. Good luck!

Q. On average, when do guys lose their virginity? I'm thinking I want to have sex when I'm 15 or 16 but am wondering if this is average or not.

According to a survey of more than 10,000 males by the web site HealthyStrokes.com in the second half of 2007, the average age of first intercourse for 5009 sexually experienced males is 18.3. The median age is also 18.

About a third of sexually experienced males first had intercourse by the age you're aiming for.

Q. Will masturbating daily help me last longer when I have coitus? Will this increase my stamina?

Yes. According to a survey of over 10,000 males by the web site HealthyStrokes.com in the second half of 2007, each act of masturbation in a week increases the time a male spends having intercourse by .25 minutes.

However, this is not necessarily a function of stamina and might simply reflect that guys tend to take longer to reach orgasm in intercourse the more recently they have last had an orgasm.

Either way, masturbating daily will tend to increase the duration of intercourse.

Q. My 43-year-old husband takes 15-20 minutes to make love to me, not including foreplay. Is this average?

According to a survey of over 10,000 males by the web site HealthyStrokes.com in the second half of 2007, the average 43 year old man (of which there were 87 in the survey) takes 16.2 minutes to have intercourse. In terms of the larger 40-44 age group (inclusive), the average intercourse time is 15.6 minutes. There were 479 males in that age group who answered the time question.

So I think your husband is right about average and maybe even a little longer!

Q. Will losing my virginity mean I won't enjoy masturbating as much anymore?

Absolutely not! According to a survey of over 10,000 males by the web site HealthyStrokes.com in the second half of 2007, when asked to rate masturbation on a scale of 1 to 10, the average virgin male gave it a 7.83, but the average sexually experienced male gave it an 8.02. This suggests that far from making masturbation seem not as much fun, the average male comes to enjoy masturbation even more once he has experienced entry into the gates of heaven.

Q. Is there a need for married men and women to masturbate?

According to a survey of over 10,000 males by the web site HealthyStrokes.com in the second half of 2007, 2138 of whom are currently married, the average married man masturbates 4.85 times per week and has an orgasm with a partner 2.22 times per week.

According to preliminary data from a similar survey of over 3000 females by HealthyStrokes.com that is ongoing, the average married woman masturbates 14.6 times per month and has an orgasm with a partner 9.4 times per month.

So at least among visitors to the web site HealthyStrokes.com, there is a very real need!

Q. Why does it seem that many so-called straight men are engaging in anal sex?

According to a survey of over 8000 males by the web site HealthyStrokes.com in the first half of 2007, only 33.1 percent of 3048 sexually experienced straight males have experienced anal sex with a female. The same goes for 32.4 percent of males who call themselves "mostly straight," 29.9 percent of bisexual males, 5.3 percent of mostly gay males, and 4.2 percent of gay males.

Only 1.9 percent of sexually experienced straight males have had anal sex with another male, as have 22.6 percent of mostly straight males, 54.8 percent of bisexual males, 77.8 percent of mostly gay males, and 84.5 percent of gay males.

The survey did not ask how often males engage in these acts, only if they had done them to the point of orgasm at least once. Thus, it would seem that at most a third of straight males are interested in anal sex at all, and that figure is apt to include males who have only tried it a few times.

The fact that the porn industry promotes a particular act does not mean a large share of the population is doing it, as documented by the large amount of porn dedicated to very unusual fetishes.

Q. What's the amount the average guy masturbates, and does he look at pictures while doing the deed?

According to a survey of over 10,000 males by the web site HealthyStrokes.com in the second half of 2007, the average male masturbates 6.78 times per week, or just under once a day.

According to a survey of over 8000 males by HealthyStrokes.com in the first half of 2007, 29.2 percent of males report using pictures almost always when they masturbate, an additional 31.1 percent report using pictures most of the time (or a total of 60.3 percent who use pictures most of the time), 25.9 percent use them some of the time, 8.3 percent use them only rarely, and only 5.5 percent claim to never use pictures when they masturbate.

These data suggest that on any given day, the average male is lying in bed or seated at his computer masturbating with help from a picture.

Q. Does a man's sexual peak really happen at age 19?

The sexual peak at age 19 is a myth. According to a survey of over 10,000 males by the web site HealthyStrokes.com in the second half of 2007, the average male has more than one orgasm a day from puberty until late in life. The first age at which the average weekly number of orgasms drops below 7 (by rounding) is 55.

However, in response to the question "How many times a week do you have sex when in a relationship," the high answers are at age 20 and 21, 4.6 times a week. But this rate doesn't drop sharply after the peak and remains around 3 until well into the 50s.

Q. Is once or twice a day too often for me to masturbate? (age 13)

According to a survey of more than 10,000 males by the web site HealthyStrokes.com in the second half of 2007, which included 383 current 13 year olds, the average 13 year old male masturbates 8.11 times per week. That's more than once a day, on average. 55.3 percent of 13 year old males masturbate 7 times a week or more, and 26.1 percent masturbate 10 times a week or more. 14.9 percent masturbate at least 14 times a week, or an average of twice a day or more.

So based on this, I don't think anyone can say that what you do is too much!!!

Q. Are there any males who don't masturbate?

According to a survey of over 10,000 males by the web site HealthyStrokes.com in the second half of 2007, only 90 males, or less than 1 percent, claimed to not currently masturbate. All of them had masturbated at some point.

However, it should be taken into consideration that the survey was offered on a masturbation focused web site, and therefore the males who answered the survey are not necessarily a representative sample of any population.

Q. Do teenagers typically reach orgasm more quickly than adults? What if it's only a minute?

You don't say whether you are talking about masturbation or sexual intercourse, but I will answer both based on a survey of over 10,000 males by the web site HealthyStrokes.com in the second half of 2007. At age 15, the average male takes 8.95 minutes to reach orgasm while masturbating. The median time is 5 minutes. This means that half of 15 year olds take 5 minutes or more and half take 5 minutes or less. 907 15 year old males answered that question. Based on the responses of 84 sexually experienced 15 year old males, the average time to orgasm in intercourse is 13.3 minutes and the median time is 9 minutes.

Among adult males (age 18+), the average time to orgasm while masturbating is 11.9 minutes and the median is 10 minutes. In intercourse, the average time to orgasm for an adult male is 15.6 minutes and the median is 15 minutes.

At age 15, 5 percent of males take one minute on average to reach orgasm in intercourse. 10.3 percent take two minutes on average.

So to answer your question, yes, it is normal for a teenager to reach orgasm faster than an adult. Like most males, you should expect it will take longer as you get older and become more experienced.

Q. Masturbation makes me feel terribly guilty. How normal is this?

It is normal to feel guilty about masturbating sometimes. According to a survey of over 10,000 males by the web site HealthyStrokes.com in the second half of 2007, which included 950 current 15 year olds, 5.8 percent of the 15 year olds feel guilty almost always when they masturbate, another 8.4 percent feel guilty most of the time, 27.5 feel guilty some of the time, and 31.6 percent feel guilty only rarely. Only 26.8 percent of 15 year olds say they never feel guilty.

The key to not feeling guilty or embarrassed about masturbating is to accept that it is something normal, healthy, and fun, and it is necessary for males to do it. Most authorities say that all men masturbate and some say that there are no exceptions. Besides feeling good, masturbating helps keep your sex organs in good shape and keeps your sperm and semen in optimum condition for reproducing.

You may also be interested to know that the average 15 year old male masturbates 8.2 times per week. That's more than once a day on average.

Q. I feel addicted to masturbating. What is the average age to start?

According to a survey of over 10,000 males by the web site HealthyStrokes.com in the second half of 2007, the average male started masturbating at age 12.25. This is the percentage who started at each age:

Age 10 or younger, 14.1 percent
Age 11, 13 percent
Age 12, 27.9 percent
Age 13, 23.5 percent
Age 14, 11.8 percent
Age 15, 5.5 percent
Age 16 or older, 4.3 percent

It is one of the nicest things to be addicted to. The average male masturbates 6.8 times per week. At age 14, the average is 8.4 times per week. Since they started, 28 percent of males have never stopped masturbating for longer than a week.

Q. What is the world record for a boy to go without masturbating?

According to a survey of over 8000 males by the web site HealthyStrokes.com in the first half of 2007, the longest anyone claimed to have gone without masturbating was 5110 days. However, this might not be credible. The median answer was 12 days, meaning half of the 8644 males who answered the question had gone 12 days or less as the maximum, and half had gone 12 days or more. The 95th percentile (higher than 95% of males) was 90 days.

The mean was 30 days. However, 25 percent of males had not made it a whole week without masturbating since they started. I think we can conclude that for most males, going a week or more without masturbating is tough. I think they would agree that their first orgasm after such a period of abstaining is a very big relief.

Q. How often do boys masturbate at various teen ages?

According to a survey of over 10,000 males by the web site HealthyStrokes.com in the second half of 2007, the average male masturbates 6.78 times per week. Age makes a difference. Most males start at age 12-13 and many do it very often when they first learn. At age 12-15 inclusive, the average is 8.24 times per week. That's more than once a day, on average. At age 16-19, inclusive, the average is 7.4 times per week.

Masturbating more than once a day is also pretty common. At age 12-15, inclusive, 20 percent of males masturbate 11 times a week or more. Only three percent of males in that age bracket masturbate as little as once a week.

So once a day (and occasionally twice) is very, very, very normal!!! Twice a day (regularly) is also frequently done in the early teens.

Q. Who has better orgasms? Men or women? I think the female orgasm is the more intense of the two.

According to a survey of over 10,000 males by the web site HealthyStrokes.com in the second half of 2007, asked to rate masturbation and intercourse on a scale of 1 to 10, males gave masturbation a rating of 7.92 and intercourse a rating of 8.83. Meanwhile, a separate survey of over 3,000 females by HealthyStrokes.com in 2007-08 asked the same question and found that females gave masturbation on average a rating of 7.96 and intercourse an average of 7.9. Only sexually experienced respondents were asked to rate intercourse.

The average female masturbates 19.6 times per month, or 4.5 times per week, based on 4.35 weeks in a month. The average male masturbates 6.78 times per week, or 29.5 times per month.

This doesn't conclusively answer your question, but it is interesting that males' and females' ratings of masturbation are within 4 hundredths of a point of each other and that males as a group rate intercourse higher than masturbation but females as a group rate masturbation higher than intercourse.

When asked whether intercourse or masturbation is more fun, 76 percent of sexually experienced males and 71.9 percent of sexualy experienced females said that intercourse is more fun.

In terms of their subjective experience, males and females rate both intercourse and masturbation about the same, but males masturbate considerably more often at every age level. Does this mean that males enjoy orgasms more? Not necessarily. Besides simply enjoying their orgasms, males masturbate to eliminate sexual fluids and keep their prostate and other sexual organs healthy. Some scholars theorize that masturbation in males is also useful for keeping sperm in optimum condition for fertilization.

Thanks for asking such a challenging question.

Q. Does intercourse feel better than masturbating?

According to a survey of over 10,000 males by the web site HealthyStrokes.com in the second half of 2007, asked to rate masturbation and intercourse on a scale of 1 to 10, males gave masturbation a rating of 7.92 and intercourse a rating of 8.83. This suggests that sex feels better than masturbating.

But here is something even more interesting. Sexually experienced males rate masturbation 8.02 while inexperienced males rate it only 7.83. This suggests that once you have intercourse, you start to like masturbating even better!

Another question on the survey goes even more directly to what you are asking. Sexually experienced males were asked whether intercourse or masturbation was more fun. 76 percent said intercourse is more fun.

So there is some scientific proof for you based on the opinions of more than 10,000 males that YES YES YES!!! Intercourse feels better than masturbating!

Q. What is the youngest a boy can masturbate, reach orgasm, and ejaculate fluid from his penis?

Boys can start masturbating at any time. Some boys report orgasming before age 10. There are also rare reports of boys ejaculating at age 8 or 9.

However, if you are interested in the average rather than the minimum, according to a survey of over 10,000 males by the web site HealthyStrokes.com in the second half of 2007, the average male starts masturbating at age 12.3. 7.6 percent start before age 10; 6.5 percent at age 10; 13 percent at age 11; and 27.9 percent at age 12. This means that on their 13th birthdays, the average male is already masturbating. Another 23.5 start at age 13 and 11.8 percent at age 14.

This is relatively fast progression, at least compared to girls, who typically learn to masturbate to orgasm over a longer period of time.

Q. I masturbate once or twice a week. Is this too much? (age 19)

I have to say that once or twice a week is not nearly often enough at your age. According to a survey of over 10,000 males by the web site HealthyStrokes.com in the second half of 2007, which included 453 current 19 year old males, the average 19 year old male masturbates 7.07 times a week, or just over once a day. Only 12.1 percent of 19 year old males masturbate less than three times a week. Meanwhile, 23.6 percent of 19 year old males masturbate 10 times a week or more.

Masturbation is also useful for preventing prostate cancer. According to a study by a team of doctors led by Dr. Graham Giles, males who masturbate most frequently in their teens and 20s have the least incidence of prostate cancer later. Dr. Giles recommends that younger males masturbate at least six times a week.

Q. What is the male experience of wet dreams?

A wet dream, or nocturnal emission, is an orgasm with ejaculation that males have while they are sleeping. The dreams that bring them on are not necessarily sexual in nature, but wet dreams only happen during REM sleep. Most males stop having wet dreams when they start masturbating.

According to a survey of over 10,000 males by the web site HealthyStrokes.com in the second half of 2007, only 60 percent of males have ever had a wet dream. Of them, 54.9 percent stopped having them when they learned to masturbate, while another 20.8 percent continued to have them for a while after they started masturbating, but then they stopped. Only 14.6 percent of males claim to currently have wet dreams.

In the same survey, 60 percent of males who are experienced at both say they prefer masturbation to wet dreams, 9.4 percent prefer wet dreams to masturbation, and 30.6 percent like them equally well.

When asked how often they would have wet dreams if they could choose, here is what males who have had wet dreams say:

Every night, 18.4 percent
Several times a week, 14 percent
Once a week, 19.6 percent
Once a month, 18 percent
Never, 30 percent

Here is what males who have never had a wet dream say:
Every night, 13.1 percent
Several times a week, 9.5 percent
Once a week, 13.8 percent
Once a month, 13.2 percent
Never, 50.4 percent

I wonder if the extra large share of males who have never had a wet dream wishing they never would have one isn't sour grapes because they suspect they never will have one. As the author of HealthyStrokes.com, I get e-mails from males desperate to have a wet dream all the time.

Q. What is the typical masturbating frequency of a 15 year old boy?

According to a survey of over 10,000 males by the web site HealthyStrokes.com in the second half of 2007, the average 15 year old male masturbates 8.2 times per week, or just over once a day. There were 950 current 15 year old males in the survey.

67 percent of 15 year olds masturbate 8 times a week or less. 14 percent masturbate 9-11 times a week, 12 percent masturbate 12-15 times per week, and 7 percent masturbate 16 times a week or more.

Q. Is it true that all boys masturbate?

To answer your question literally, not all BOYS masturbate. However, it is almost certain that the ones who are not masturbating already will be doing so by age 18. Some authorities on male sexuality say that all men masturbate and that there are no exceptions. But not all males have started to masturbate at a particular age.

Only 14.1 percent of males started masturbating by age 11; 13 percent started at age 11; 27.9 percent age age 12; 23.5 percent at age 13; 11.8 percent at age 14; and 5.5 percent at age 15.

To put this another way, by their 13th birthdays, only 54.9 percent of boys have started masturbating. This is a majority, to be sure, but it is a long way from "all boys." By their 16th birthdays, 95.7 percent of males have started to masturbate. On their 19th birthday, over 99 percent of men claim to have started masturbating.

Q. How many minutes a day does the average 15 year old guy spend masturbating?

According to a survey of over 10,000 males by the web site HealthyStrokes.com in the second half of 2007, which included 907 current 15 year olds, the median 15 year old boy masturbates to orgasm in 5 minutes and the average 15 year old male masturbates 8.17 times per week.

Assuming some time is spent before masturbating getting ready for it and some time is spent after it relaxing, it is probably reasonable to believe that the average 15 year old male spends 15 minutes a day on masturbation related business.

Q. What is the average time it takes a 16 year old to ejaculate?

According to a survey of over 10,000 males by the web site HealthyStrokes.com in the second half of 2007, which included 795 current 16 year olds, the median 16 year old takes 7 minutes to masturbate to orgasm. Among the 108 sexually experienced 16 year olds in the survey, the median time to reach orgasm in intercourse is 11 minutes.

Q. How addicted is the average guy to masturbating, on a 1 to 10 scale?

According to a survey of more than 10,000 males by the web site HealthyStrokes.com in the second half of 2007, the average male rated masturbation 7.92 on a scale of 1 to 10. The sexually experienced among these males rated intercourse 8.83.

There is a strong relationship between the rating given to masturbation and the frequency of doing it. Starting with a baseline of 4.31 times per week, each additional point of rating results in .31 additional sessions of masturbating a week. Put in more simple terms, here is how often males masturbate by their rating, with the number of males who gave each rating. Note that the vast majority of answerers gave it a high rating:

Rating=1, 4.88 times per week, number of males=24
Rating=2, 5.1 times per week, number of males=32
Rating=3, 5.4 times per week, number of males=92
Rating=4, 6.2 times per week, number of males=183
Rating=5, 5.9 times per week, number of males=590
Rating=6, 6.4 times per week, number of males=813
Rating=7, 6.2 times per week, number of males=1953
Rating=8, 6.7 times per week, number of males=2997
Rating=9, 7.3 times per week, number of males=1562
Rating=10, 7.5 times per week, number of males=2250

Addiction is a tricky question, but I think the survey research points to the answer you are looking for.

Q. Is it weird or abnormal to stretch out your legs when masturbating?

According to a survey of over 10,000 males by the web site HealthyStrokes.com in the second half of 2007, 19.3 percent of males stretch their legs out tense almost always when they masturbate, another 20.6 percent do it most of the time (a total of 39.9 percent who do it most of the time), 50.4 percent do it sometimes, and only 9.7 percent claim to never do that.

So it is not at all weird or abnormal!!!

I speculate that the reason people do that is because it cuts off feelings from the legs, so that they can concentrate on what they're feeling elsewhere.

Q. For males, how much better is coitus than masturbating?

I think the bottom line is that males enjoy intercourse more than masturbating, but it is not earth-shakingly different.

Q. When should a boy start to masturbate?

According to a survey of over 10,000 males by the web site HealthyStrokes.com in the second half of 2007, the average male starts masturbating at age 12.25. Only 14 percent of males start at age 10 and under. 13 percent start when they're 11, 27.9 percent while they're 12, and 23.5 percent when they're 13. At that point, 78.3 percent are masturbating regularly. If he starts at age 12 or 13 (as mentioned above, more than half do), he is very normal.

Q. I have two friends who insist they don't masturbate. One is a devout Christian who calmly stated that has no interest in sex and girls at this time. The other one is a pothead who kind of screamed when asked and insisted he doesn't. Should I believe either one of them?

According to a survey of over 10,000 males by HealthyStrokes.com in the second half of 2007, here is the number of times the average male masturbates a week, by religious group:

Catholic, 6.74
Baptist, 6.47
Pentecostal, 5.72
Other Protestant, 6.16
LDS, 5.53
Non-denominational Christian, 6.34
Other Christian, 7.14
Jewish, 7.61
Muslim, 5.74
Buddhist, 6.83
Hindu, 6.75
Other religions, 7.08
Not religious, 7.29

If we limit the age group to 17-19, inclusive, here is how it breaks down by religion:
Catholic, 7.44
Baptist, 7.28
Pentecostal, 5.92
Other Protestant, 7.37
LDS, 6.06
Non-denominational Christian, 6.64
Other Christian, 7.57
Jewish, 9.45
Muslim, 5.69
Buddhist, 6.3
Hindu, 7.23
Other religions, 7.29
No religion, 7.93

Of particular interest to your question is the group "non-denominational Christian" which includes most evangelicals and those who describe themselves as "Christian" without qualifying it with the name of a denomination like Catholic or Methodist, etc.

It would have been of great interest if you had said the age of your friend. From the sounds of it, he is at or around adulthood, developed normally and turned out fairly masculine. I would be inclined to believe that he masturbates and masturbates often. A male over the age of 14 would have a tough time getting me to believe that he doesn't masturbate, and I was once one of them. (15 3/4 for me, not a minute too soon!)

In the same HealthyStrokes.com poll, males were asked if anyone ever asked when they were young if they masturbated, and what they said or would have said. Here are the results for all Christians (the first 7 categories on the list above):

No one asked, would have denied it, 28.7 percent
No one asked, would have admitted it, 9.8 percent
No one asked, don't know how I would have answered, 15 percent
Someone asked, and I denied it, 18.7 percent
Someone asked, and I admitted it, 19.5 percent
Someone asked, and I avoided answering, 8.3 percent

So denying one masturbates is at least as popular among Christians as admitting to it.

Another interesting question on the same survey is what they would say if someone asked them now if they masturbate. Here are the results by religion:

Catholic, admit 68.5, deny 10.1, avoid 21.4
Baptist, admit 62.1, deny 16.5, avoid 21..5
Pentecostal, admit 60.7, deny 14.8, avoid 24.6
Other Protestant, admit 70.1, deny 9.3, avoid 20.6
LDS, admit 42.2, deny 22.5, avoid 35.4
Non-denominational Christian, admit 70, deny 9.7, avoid 20.3
Other Christian, admit 62.7, deny 14.1, avoid 23.2
Jewish, admit 70.6, deny 9.6, avoid 19.8
Muslim, admit 44.1, deny 24.8, avoid 31.1
Buddhist, admit 65.6, deny 16, avoid 18.4
Hindu, admit 58.4, deny 15.2, avoid 26.4
Other religion, admit 71.8, deny 11.5, avoid 16.8
No religion, admit 74.8, deny 7.5, avoid 17.7

From this, it looks like there is a baseline level of from 7.5 to 9.25 percent in all religions (and even no religion) of males who are so ashamed or embarrassed of masturbating that they will deny it. This is true even for religions like Judaism and Other Protestant (Lutheran, Methodist, etc.) where masturbation is not mentioned or is even regarded as a positive thing. Religions that put an extra emphasis on masturbation as something "sinful" or "wrong" (such as LDS and Islam) will have even more men deny that they masturbate. Incidentally, only 90 males out of more than 10,000 in the survey deny that they currently masturbate (per my survey), so the more than 1100 who say they would deny if asked are truly lying.

The weedy guy, on the other hand, reacted in an immature manner which suggests that he is less masculine than the Christian one, and it would be more plausible that he doesn't masturbate, although I find it much more likely that he does.

Q. When do girls start to masturbate, on average?

According to preliminary results of a survey of over 3000 females by the web site HealthyStrokes.com in 2007-08, the average female started to masturbate at age 11.5 and started to masturbate with the express idea of giving herself sexual pleasure at age 13.1. The average female first masturbated to orgasm at age 13.6.

Q. I sometimes masturbate 10 times a day. Is this normal? (age 14)

That is very often. According to preliminary results of a survey of over 3000 females by the web site HealthyStrokes.com in 2007-08, only 16 percent of females masturbate more than an average of once a day. The average female masturbates 19.6 times a month, although for 14 year olds, the average is 26.8 times per month, or almost once a day.

Q. I have a friend who says she never masturbates. She is 16. Should I believe her?

According to preliminary results of a survey of over 3000 females by the web site HealthyStrokes.com in 2007-08, which included 272 16 year old girls, only 5 claimed to never have masturbated. The average 16 year old girl masturbates 23.7 times per month.

However, keep in mind that this survey was done on a masturbation-related web site and therefore the females who read it and answer surveys there are apt to be more avid at masturbating than a random sample of the population.

Q. I'm a virgin and I don't masturbate much, and after a month of no masturbating, I have a wet dream. Is this normal? (age 25)

It is a normal occurrence, but it is not normal to go a month without masturbating at age 25, when you have no sex partner. According to a survey of over 10,000 males by the web site HealthyStrokes.com in the second half of 2007, the average 25 year old male masturbates 6.1 times per week. That's almost once a day. The average male virgin between the ages of 23 and 27, inclusive, masturbates 6.2 times per week.

Q. Do males or females masturbate more often?

Males definitely masturbate more than females. It is a biological necessity for males to masturbate. Not only is it fun, but masturbating eliminates sexual fluids that have accumulated, it keeps sperm in better condition for fertilization by eliminating the older, less viable ones, and it prevents prostate cancer. Females don't share these biological imperatives; they mostly masturbate because it's fun. Although masturbation has been observed in every species of mammal, there is no species in which the females masturbate more than the males, and no society on earth in which the women masturbate more than the men.

Some authorities say 100% of males past puberty masturbate and that there are no exceptions. According to a survey of more than 10,000 males by the web site HealthyStrokes.com in the second half of 2007, 99.15 percent reported masturbating currently. All of those males report having masturbated in the past.

I have heard men say that they have never masturbated, but I don't believe them.

It's a different story for the girls. According to preliminary results of a survey of over 3000 females by HealthyStrokes.com in 2007-08, 3.5 percent of females claim to never have masturbated. Among females who do, they masturbate only 5.2 times a week on average in the 13-18 age group inclusive, as opposed to 7.8 times for males of the same age.

Q. I feel addicted to masturbation. I feel compelled to do it whenever I see Internet porn, which is all the time. I immediately go to the bathroom and masturbate, even in school. What do I need to do to stop?

According to a survey of over 10,000 males by the web site HealthyStrokes.com in the second half of 2007, the average 17 year old male (of which there were 681 in the survey) masturbates 7.37 times per week, or slightly more than once per day. If you were in this range, I would say you have no problem and have nothing to worry about. There is nothing wrong with masturbating about once a day. 21 percent of 17 year old males masturbate between 8 and 12 times a week.

However, doing it as often and as impulsively as you're doing it is apt to lead to problems. You are bound to get discovered masturbating at school as often as you're doing it. That could lead to problems with the school authorities or a reputation as a pervert. You don't want that.

One way to limit yourself to once a day or so is to mark each time you do it in a little calendar (no one would have to know what the calendar is for; if someone finds it, tell them it's your record of tooth flossing that your dentist suggested). Knowing you'll have to mark it in a calendar is apt to inhibit your doing it more times than you want.

Masturbation is normal, healthy, and fun, but it isn't when it becomes a compulsion. Please take steps to slow down now before it turns into a serious problem.

Q. Is it a sin for a woman to masturbate in the Jewish religion?

I don't have anything to say about Jewish theology on this question, but I can share some survey results that suggest that Jews are unlikely to believe that masturbation is a sin.

According to preliminary results of a survey of more than 3000 females by the web site HealthyStrokes.com in 2007-08, these are the average values of a question about guilt concerning masturbation, by religion. A low value indicates a lot of guilt about masturbating, and a high value indicates low guilt. Note that the Jewish value is higher (i.e., Jewish females feel less guilty about masturbating) than all of the other religious groups, except other religions and not religious.

Catholic, 3.8, Number of respondents=549
Baptist, 3.5 , N=198
Pentecostal, 3.4, N=55
Other Protestant, 3.7, N=288
LDS, 3.2 , N=25
Non-denominational Christian, 3.7, N=231
Other Christian, 3.5 , N=264
Jewish, 3.9 , N=55
Muslim, 3, N=63
Buddhist, 3.5 , N=41
Hindu, 3.7 , N=53
Sikh, 2.8 , N=10
Other religions, 4.1 , N=172
Not religious, 4.1 , N=966

Another question in this survey asks about embarrassment about masturbation. Jewish females are the least embarrassed of all the religious groups included, except for "Other religions."

Among males, according to another survey by HealthyStrokes.com, Jews masturbate more than any other religious group and feel less guilt or embarrassment about it.

Q. When I masturbate, my legs shake and I can't go on. How can I make it to the point of orgasm? (age 15)

It helps if you hold your legs out tense while you masturbate. That will keep them from shaking and let you concentrate on what you're doing.

According to preliminary results of a survey of over 3000 females by the web site HealthyStrokes.com in 2007-08, 21.3 percent of females do this almost every time when they masturbate, another 18 percent do it most of the time (or a total of 39.3 percent who do it most of the time), and 47.9 percent do it some of the time. Only 12.9 percent of females say they never hold their legs tense while they masturbate.

Practice makes perfect! You will be having orgasms soon.

Q. Is it normal for a guy to masturbate every day?

According to a survey of over 10,000 males by the web site HealthyStrokes.com in the second half of 2007, here is how often males masturbate in a week, by age:

12 | 8.3 times per week, number of respondents=107
13 | 8.1, N=383
14 | 8.4 , N=714
15 | 8.2, N=950
16 | 7.4, N=830
17 | 7.4, N=681
18 | 7.7, N=627
19 | 7.1, N=453
20 | 7.2, N=344
21 | 7.0, N=387
22 | 7.1, N= 294
23 | 7.2, N=282
24 | 6.2, N=246
25 | 6.1, N=260
26 | 6.7, N=176

As you can see, it is normal for guys to masturbate once a day or more until age 24, and even then, the frequency only goes down a little bit. You are very normal and not masturbating too frequently. It will not harm you.

What's more, you are actually preventing harm by ejaculating that frequently. According to research by a team of doctors led by Dr. Graham Giles, males who masturbate most often in their teens and 20s have the least incidence of prostate cancer later. Dr. Giles recommends that younger males masturbate at least six times a week.

Q. Where do guys masturbate?

According to a survey of more than 8000 males by the web site HealthyStrokes.com in the first half of 2007, 45.5 percent of male masturbation takes places in bed, 26.7 percent in the bathroom, and 27.8 percent in other places. Males were asked to supply a percentage for each of the three places that had to add up to 100 percent.

Another survey of more than 10,000 males by HealthyStrokes.com in the second half of 2007 asked a slightly different question. Instead of asking an estimation of percent of masturbation by three places, the question asked was "where do you masturbate most often?" Bed was still first with 43.4 percent. The bathroom was the choice of 21.7 percent. The computer desk was second with 28.2 percent. The couch at 3.8 percent and other at 2.9 percent were far behind these three most common places.

This is new with this generation. Before 1995, hardly any masturbation took place at computer desks, and now it has replaced the bathroom as males' second favorite place.

Q. I've never had sex. Will this be something people will use to make fun of me at college? (age 18)

Absolutely not! The more education you have, the more likely you are to be a virgin at age 18. According to a survey of over 10,000 males by the web site HealthyStrokes.com in the second half of 2007, the average high school dropout had intercourse for the first time at age 17.0. The average male with a high school education had intercourse for the first time at age 17.8. The average male with some college had intercourse for the first time at age 17.9. The average male college graduate had intercourse for the first time at age 19.1. The average male with graduate school had intercourse for the first time at age 20.2.

This means that most male college students are virgins when they arrive on campus. You are not the only one. No one will dare to laugh at you.

Q. How often do sexually active men in their 40s masturbate, and where do they do it?

According to a survey of over 10,000 males by the web site HealthyStrokes.com in the second half of 2007, the average sexually active male in his 40s masturbates 5.32 times per week and has orgasms with partners 2.6 times per week.

For 41.6 percent of these men, the favorite place to masturbate is bed; for 22.9 percent it is the bathroom, 24.1 percent the computer, 7.1 percent the couch, and 4.4 percent other places. There were 834 sexually active men in the 40-49 age group, inclusive, in the survey.

Q. How often is it normal for a mid-20s couple to make love?

According to a survey of over 10,000 males by the web site HealthyStrokes.com in the second half of 2007, which included 141 married men between the ages of 23 and 27, inclusive, the average married man in that age range has an orgasm with a partner 3.17 times per week.

Q. Why do males masturbate? I'm a girl but I keep hearing about it from male friends, and they talk about it like they really enjoy it.

It is a biological necessity for males to masturbate. Not only is it fun, but masturbating eliminates sexual fluids that have accumulated, like sperm and seminal fluid and prostate fluid. Females' sexual fluids can be eliminated without orgasm, but males have to have an orgasm to properly eliminate theirs.

Masturbating also keeps sperm in better condition for fertilization by eliminating the older, less viable ones. A male who has masturbated recently has a better chance of impregnating a woman than one who hasn't.

According to research by a team of doctors led by Dr. Graham Giles, masturbation prevents prostate cancer. They asked a group of men with prostate cancer and a similar group without it how often they masturbated and had sex at various times in their lives, and they found that the males who masturbated most often in their teens and 20s had the least incidence of prostate cancer. Dr. Giles recommends that younger males masturbate at least six times a week.

Yes, absolutely your male friends enjoy it. It might be the one thing that all males enjoy. More males enjoy masturbating than enjoy video games, or watching football, or eating steak (think about vegetarians), or even sex with women (think about gay guys). In the same HealthyStrokes.com survey, 96.85 percent of males gave masturbation a rating of 5 or higher on a scale of 1 to 10.

Q. When on average do guys lose their virginity?

According to a survey of more than 10,000 males by the web site HealthyStrokes.com in the second half of 2007, the average male has intercourse for the first time at age 18.3. The number of males who reported an age of first intercourse was 5009.

Q. Should a man be expected to lose interest in sex when he gets to be the age of 46?

According to a survey of over 10,000 males by the web site HealthyStrokes.com, the average male has 7.5 orgasms a week or more through age 40. From age 41 to 50, inclusive, this drops to 7.32 times per week. Here is the breakdown in number of orgasms per week by half decade and the number of respondents in each age group:

Age 10-14, 9.2 (N=1131)
15-19, 8.41 (N=3335)
20-24, 8.41 (N=1468)
25-29, 8.69 (N=862)
30-34, 8.26 (N=573)
35-39, 7.94 (N=545)
40-44, 7.45 (N=545)
45-49, 7.5 (N=505)
50-54, 7.06 (N=346)
55-59, 6.53 (N=296)
60-64, 6.5 (N=222)
65-69, 5.38 (N=136)
70-74, 5.38 (N=68)
75-79, 4.68 (N=38)
80-84, 4.93 (N=14)

Among males in his age group (45-49, inclusive), the average married man (N=308) has 7.14 orgasms per week; the average divorced man (N=87) has 9.26; the average never-married man (N=102) has 6.96.

Q. Does being circumcised or uncircumcised affect the sexual pleasure a man gets? (age 15)

According to a survey of over 10,000 males by the web site HealthyStrokes.com in the second half of 2007, males were asked to rate both masturbating and intercourse on scales of 1 to 10 based on how pleasurable they found it. Circumsized males gave both activities slightly higher ratings, although only for masturbation is the difference statistically significant.

Masturbation:
Circumcised: 7.98 (N=5963)
Uncircumcised: 7.87 (N=3697)
Not sure: 7.69 (N=494)
This difference is statistically significant at the 95% level.

Intercourse (asked only of sexually experienced males):
Circumcised: 8.86 (N=3196)
Uncircumcised: 8.77 (N=1546)
Not sure: 8.7 (N=114)
This difference is not statistically significant.

However, uncircumcised males masturbate more often than circumcised males. In the HealthyStrokes survey, uncircumcised males masturbate on average 6.99 times per week, while circumcised males masturbate on average 6.6 times per week. This difference is statistically significant at the 95% level. Someone could conjecture that by masturbating more often, uncircumcised males are silently saying they enjoy it more than they do.

The survey also asked the question, "Which is more fun, intercourse or masturbating?" The result found more uncircumcised than circumcised males claim intercourse is more fun than masturbating. 74.8 percent of circumcised males and 78.4 percent of uncircumcised males say that intercourse is more fun. This is statistically significant at the 95% level. However, if only responses from exclusively heterosexual males are counted, the difference is no longer significant.

Your question would be most relevant if posed to men who get circumcised after being sexually experienced as uncircumcised. For males who have been one way or the other since puberty, the differences, if any, are very slight. The bottom line is that nearly every guy, regardless of circumcision status, enjoys sex and masturbation a whole lot.

Q. What time of day do males masturbate?

According to a survey of over 8000 males by the web site HealthyStrokes.com in the first half of 2007, males on average do 14.9 percent of their masturbating first thing in the morning, 46.3 percent at bedtime, and 38.8 percent at other times.

First thing after coming home from school is a popular time among high school students.

Bedtime remains the most popular choice throughout life. First thing in the morning gets more popular as a male gets older, partially because it is easiest to get an erection first thing in the morning.

Q. I haven't masturbated for a week because when I do, I feel like a loser who can't get a girl.

You are very normal. It is normal to masturbate at your age. You don't say how old you are, but for sake of argument, let's say you're 16. According to a survey of over 10,000 males by the web site HealthyStrokes.com in the second half of 2007, the average 16 year old male masturbates 7.4 times per week. That's more than once a day. According to the same survey, 81 percent of 16 year old males have no orgasms with partners in any form. That means it's much more likely than not that a 16 year old male masturbates daily or more and has no kind of sex with partners.

It is also very typical for males to feel guilty about masturbating. At age 16, 42 percent of males feel guilty about masturbating at least some of the time.

It's not that you can't get a girl. You just haven't tried enough. Make a list of girls that you'd like to go out with, and ask them out. It doesn't mean you have to have sex. It would be better if you didn't. Just remember that it's the minority of males who are involved with girls at your age, so there's no reason to feel inferior if you aren't, and no reason to feel guilty about masturbating. The guys your age who are sexually active masturbate even more than you do. According to the HealthyStrokes survey, 16 year old males who are sexually active masturbate 7.8 times per week on average. That's more than the guys who don't have sex.

Time to put an end to your week of frustration. Read the link below if you need to know more.

Q. What is the rate of masturbating in 6th grade?

According to a survey of over 10,000 males by the web site HealthyStrokes.com in the second half of 2007, only 14.1 percent of males started masturbating before their 11th birthdays and 13 percent started while they were 11. Another 27.9 percent started while they were 12. Most people in the 6th grade are 12 or turning 12 soon. From this I would gather that about half of 6th grade males are masturbating by the end of the school year.

According to preliminary results of a survey of more than 3000 females by HealthyStrokes.com in 2007-08, 18 percent of females started masturbating with sexual pleasure in mind before their 11th birthdays, and another 9.6 percent started this while they were 11. Another 18.3 percent started while they were 12. From this it is reasonable to believe that fewer girls than boys are masturbating by the end of 6th grade, but not hugely fewer.

Q. Would it be bad to masturbate twice a day every single day of the year, rain or shine, with no exceptions?

It is bad for two reasons.

You don't say how old you are, but if you are older than 14, I would say that frequency of masturbation is bad. According to a survey of over 10,000 males by the web site HealthyStrokes.com in the second half of 2007, the average male masturbates 6.8 times per week, or just under once a day. Only 10.7 percent of males masturbate 14 times a week or more. So your frequency is quite high by itself.

The second reason it is bad is that no one wants to masturbate twice a day every day with no exceptions. That sounds like you have a masturbating regimen, or quota, and that's no fun. Do it when you feel like it. Don't do it when you don't feel like it. Do it if and only if you feel like it. Maybe that will be twice a day sometimes, maybe it will be once a day most of the time, maybe you will have a threepeat some day. Maybe you will go four days without it. But do it because you want to and not because you feel compelled to do it twice a day every day with no exceptions.

Q. How is it possible to abstain from sex?

Abstinence from intercourse is pretty easy; just don't have sex with anyone. You can do that for a year or two or 10 or 20 or a lifetime.

Abstaining from ejaculating at all is very, very difficult. According to a survey of over 8000 males by the web site HealthyStrokes.com in the first half of 2007, the average male had gone 30.6 days without masturbating since he started. However, the median was only 12 days. That means that for half of guys, the longest they've gone without masturbating is 12 days or more, and for the other half, it is 12 days or less. The most common answer was 7 days.

Q. I masturbate at least once daily. I haven't made it a full day without a session in over a year. Is this normal?

According to a survey of over 10,000 males by the web site HealthyStrokes.com in the second half of 2007, which included 714 males currently age 14, the average 14 year old male masturbates 8.39 times per week. That's more than once a day. Only two claimed to not masturbate.

20 percent of 14 year old males -- one in five -- masturbate 10 times a week or more. And 1 percent claim to masturbate 4 times a day or more.

I don't know if it's the best number, but the most common answer was 7. If you masturbate once a day or so, you have LOTS and LOTS and LOTS of company!!!

Q. I'm gay and I don't like to masturbate. When am I going to be old enough to quit?

You are not going to like my answer.

According to a survey of over 10,000 males by the web site HealthyStrokes.com in the second half of 2007, in which males were asked to rate masturbation on a scale of 1 to 10, gay males gave the act a higher rating than straight males. Here are the results:

Straight, 7.76, number of respondents=6452
Mostly straight, 8.09, N=2035
Bisexual, 8.18, N=748
Mostly gay, 8.22, N=400
Gay, 8.46, N=512

The more gay a guy is, the better he likes masturbating. Strange but true.

The average male started masturbating at age 12.25. There is no age at which males stop masturbating. According to the same survey, the average man in his 70s masturbates 4 times a week.

Instead of feeling down on masturbation, you ought to learn to accept it as something normal, healthy, and fun, and something that males have to do out of necessity. In addition to being fun, it keeps your prostate in good health and even wards off prostate cancer. Why don't you talk to some gay guys your age about masturbating? Maybe hearing the perspective of another guy like you can help you like it better.

Q. I masturbate 5-7 times a week. Am I normal? (age 32)

According to a survey of over 10,000 males by the web site HealthyStrokes.com in the second half of 2007, which included 111 current 32 year olds, the average 32 year old masturbates 5.3 times per week. So you are right about average!

Q. I want to know how often it is for males to have sex at the ages of 20, 45, and 60.

According to a survey of over 10,000 males by the web site HealthyStrokes.com in the second half of 2007, the average 20 year old male who has a partner (of whom there were 117 in the survey) has sex with a partner 3.2 times per week and masturbates 6.6 times per week.

The average male between the ages of 42 and 47, inclusive, who has a partner has sex with a partner 2.4 times per week and masturbates 5.2 times per week. There were 495 men with partners in this age group in the survey.

The average male between the ages of 57 and 62, inclusive, who has a partner has sex with a partner 2.7 times per week and masturbates 4.3 times per week. There were 233 men with partners in this age group in the survey.

Another question on the survey asked sexually experienced men how often they have sex when they're in a relationship, whether or not they currently have a partner. At age 20, the average is 4.6 times per week, at age 45, it is 2.7 times per week, and at age 60 it is 2.8 times per week.

Q. What is typical masturbation frequency at my age? (age 22)

According to a survey of over 10,000 males by the web site HealthyStrokes.com in the second half of 2007, which included 294 current 22 year old males, the average 22 year old masturbates 7.1 times per week, or just over once per day.

Only one of those 294 males claims not to masturbate at all. 25.9 percent masturbate 1-3 times per week and 51 percent masturbate 4-9 times per week. 16.3 percent masturbate 1-15 times per week and 6.8 percent masturbate more than 15 times per week.

In terms of prostate health, Dr. Graham Giles recommends that younger males (like you) masturbate at least 6 times a week to prevent prostate cancer. The majority of guys your age follow the doctor's advice.

Q. Is it normal for me to masturbate three times a day? (age 20)

According to a survey of over 10,000 males by the web site HealthyStrokes.com in the second half of 2007, which included 344 current 20 year olds, the average 20 year old masturbates 7.2 times per week, or just over once per day. 70 percent of 20 year old males masturbate 7 times a week or less. Only 5.2 percent masturbate 20 times a week or more, so your frequency is not exactly normal for your age.

Q. How long should masturbating last for a male?

According to a survey of more than 10,000 males by the web site HealthyStrokes.com in the second half of 2007, the average male takes 11 minutes to masturbate to orgasm. The median male takes 7 minutes. This means that half of males take 7 minutes or less and half take seven minutes or more.

It varies a lot by age. At age 14, the average male takes 8.3 minutes and the median is 5 minutes. At age 40, the average is 12.7 minutes and the median is 10 minutes.

The important thing is that it lasts as long as you want it to. If you just really want to get it over with, then it's fine to masturbate in a minute or two. If you are having a good time doing it, it's fine to stretch it out to 20 or 30 minutes if you want. If you think you're coming too fast, then work at being able to last longer.

Q. What happens when parents catch a guy masturbating?

There are a lot of stories about what happened when regular guys (and girls) were discovered by parents, siblings, friends... at the web site HealthyStrokes.com. See the link below (but take the space out).

Most of the people who are caught decide they don't have to do anything. The intruders just leave quietly and nothing is ever said about it. According to a survey of over 10,000 males by HealthyStrokes.com in the second half of 2007, 78.9 percent of 403 males who were caught only by their mothers said no one said anything as a result. 19.6 percent said they talked about it afterward. The percentage is about the same for 267 guys caught only by their fathers. 19.9 percent talked about it and 79.8 percent didn't. The same is true for brothers.

It is completely different if you are caught by your girlfriend. Then most of the time it leads to sex!

Q. How long will sex take relative to how long it takes a guy to masturbate? 2x? 3x?

A survey of more than 10,000 males by the web site HealthyStrokes.com in the second half of 2007 asked them to estimate how long they take on average to masturbate and have intercourse to orgasm. 4745 sexually experienced males provided a time for both. 18.5 percent say they take exactly the same time for both acts. 23.9 percent say they take less time to have intercourse than to masturbate, but 57.6 percent say they take longer to have intercourse than to masturbate.

Overall, the average ratio is 2.03. Thus, the average male takes just about twice as long to reach orgasm in intercourse as it takes him to masturbate. Among those males who take longer to reach orgasm in intercourse, the ratio is 2.98, or almost three times as long.

The median is not as different. That is because some males take much, much longer to reach orgasm in intercourse. Those males bring the average way up. The median male -- the one in the very middle -- takes 1.4 times as long. So if he takes 10 minutes on average to masturbate, then he takes 14 minutes on average in intercourse. The ratio for the median male among those who take longer is 2.

I hope this does not have you drowing in statistics. I think the bottom line is that you should expect intercourse to take you 1.5x what you now spend masturbating, but as you get better at controlling your ejaculation in intercourse, it will take more like 2x or 3x. It's mostly up to you!

Q. I am troubled because I only started masturbating 8 months ago. I do it once or twice every day and think of sexy girls. Is this normal? (age 18)

According to a survey of over 10,000 males by the web site HealthyStrokes.com in the second half of 2007, which included 627 current 18 year old men, the average 18 year old masturbates 7.7 times per week. That's more than once a day on average.

Three fourths of 18 year old males masturbate less than ten times per week, so you are a little on the high side.

However, the average 18 year old male started masturbating at age 12.4. If we assume they have masturbated at their current frequency since then, that means that the average 18 year old male has masturbated 2323 times. Since you only started eight months ago, you obviously haven't done it as many times as your same-age friends. No one would blame you for masturbating a little more than average to make up for lost time.

What you are thinking about is very, very normal. There is no reason to be troubled.

Q. I masturbate every night at bedtime. Is this dangerous? (age 16)

If it's about once a day, then you're about average for guys your age. In a survey of over 10,000 males by the web site HealthyStrokes.com in the second half of 2007, 16 year old males masturbate on average 7.37 times a week, or about once per day. There were 830 current 16 year olds in the survey.

There is nothing wrong with masturbating often, even daily -- 16 percent of 16 year old males in the same survey masturbate 10 times a week or more.

It may also be of interest that among 16 year old males, 51.3 percent of masturbating is done at bedtime. It is the most popular time among all ages.

Q. What is the Australian rate of circumcision?

According to a survey of more than 10,000 males by the web site HealthyStrokes.com in the second half of 2007, which included 483 males in Australia who were sure of their circumcision status, 34.6 percent are circumcised and 65.4 percent are uncircumcised.

Q. Does masturbating cause bad luck, or is it just silly to think so?

According to a survey of over 10,000 males by the web site HealthyStrokes.com in the second half of 2007, 99.15 percent of males admitted to masturbating currently. They can't all have bad luck. 56 percent of the men over 20 have college degrees or higher, so bad luck didn't keep them from getting educated. More than half of the men over 20 are or have been married, so bad luck didn't keep them from finding a mate.

I think it would be really bad luck if you grew up and never masturbated. Many guys think it is the most fun thing they do.

And that's not being silly!

Q. How long can a masturbatorily experienced guy go without doing it?

According to a survey of over 8000 males by HealthyStrokes.com in the first half of 2007, the median male who had tried to quit masturbating had abstained 14 days, while the medan male who had never tried to quit had abstained 10 days. The mean of sexually experienced (i.e., non-virgin) males who've tried to quit is 50 days, while the mean of virgin males who've tried to quit is 39 days. Keep in mind that the median is a better measure than the mean because males who claim to have abstained from masturbating for a long time bring the average up but only move the median a notch.

Do African black males masturbate? Is masturbation a white man practice only because I have never heard of my relatives or friends discussing it. If they do, what is their frequency in masturbation? (age 19)

I am inclined to believe that African black males masturbate. In my 2007 survey of over 10,000 males, there were only 15 black African males. That is a pretty low number. Among those 15, the mean frequency of masturbation was 5.1 times per week. Excluding one man who claimed to masturbate 30 times per week, the mean goes down to 3.3. Keep in mind these are people who answered a survey at a masturbation web site, so they are apt to be more enthusiastic about masturbating than the average person. Among blacks generally (most of whom were in America), the mean frequency is 6.1 times per week.
